> I am from Qizhou, of the Jiang family. Extraordinary and remarkable from birth, at seventeen I left home at Dongchan Monastery, shaving my head. I first studied under Shuinan and there tasted the Dharma, then visited many venerable masters. Arriving at Yunju, I paid respects to Yuanwu, who upon seeing me, guided me with great urgency. When he went to Sichuan, he directed me to see Zhangjiao. When Zhangjiao moved to Huqiu, I accompanied him. Within half a year, I suddenly understood the great matter. Afterward, I went to visit Ciyan and took a seat at Lianyun. I began teaching at Miaoyan and moved through many great monasteries. When I was at Guizong, Dahui was at Meiyang. A monk brought my teachings to him. Upon seeing them, Dahui sent a verse: "Cutting off the Golden Wheel's first peak, a thousand demons all hide their tracks. This year I've received true news—they say Yangqi's main lineage flows through." Such was his esteem for me. Later I went to Tiantong. At the hall, I said: "Nine years facing a wall—this ruined the descendants of the Eastern Land. Departing westward with one shoe—this dulled the Yellow-Faced Old Man." Drawing a line with my staff, I said: "A stone ox blocks the ancient road—one horse gives birth in three tiger years." <note>Huolian added: "Today is the eighth." Xi'an added: "Dried lychees."</note> At the hall, I said: "Linji received three blows from Huangbo. Can you all see through this? Even if you could bite through it at once, you still wouldn't be a great man. The Buddhas of the three times have their mouths hung on the wall. What would the old masters of the world eat with?" <note>Biting through—not a drop of water can be digested. Biting through in one bite—you don't get to eat. In the end, what then? Ho!.</note> At the hall, I said: "Old blind bald Dezhang never had any flavor. Pick up the mouth, lose the nose." <note>This side cannot be dwelt in.</note> "At the third watch, singing local songs—needlessly startling King Brahma from sleep." <note>That side cannot be dwelt in.</note> I gave a shout and said: "I walk in the wild grass—you again enter the deep village." <note>Having words and no words, like a vine leaning on a tree. Manjushri and Vimalakirti, letting go and going home. Yangqi lifting this up—also just looking at the lock. There's more to say after, but don't make a mistake in lifting it. Xin Yuan, if he had been there, should have given a shout to block the way. Let all directions examine this. Why did Xin Yuan lift it wrongly? Without the fisherman's lead, how could one see the waves?.</note> At the hall, I said: "Before the fifteenth day, the water rises and the boat floats high. After the fifteenth day, more mud makes the Buddha bigger. On the fifteenth day itself, hit the East Sea carp once and rain pours like a basin. All beings in the three thousand great thousand worlds rejoice, saying this single blow indeed comes at the right time." <note>Do you all see it? Where is it not a blow at the right time? The moment you start thinking, the staff is already broken and it's no longer timely.</note> Baoyuan, unable to contain myself, leapt with joy and composed a verse to present to everyone: "The dragonfly, yes, a fine dragonfly, flying here and there, never stopping. I caught it and tore off both wings—now it's just like a big iron nail." <note>Three children hug flower drums. Don't block my ball gate! Xin Yuan gives you a coin—go buy some cake on the street.</note> At the hall, I said: "If we deliberate as one sentence—who doesn't know how to eat porridge and rice? If we don't deliberate as one sentence—the worms in the shit pit laugh at you, masters." Lifting my staff, I said: "This staff's crimes fill the heavens—banished to the two Iron Mountain circles. But tell me, does Jianfu still have faults?" Striking the ground with my staff, I said: "A moment too late." <note>Even tracing back through vast eons and forward to endless futures, one can never find Jianfu's fault. But tell me, where's the stake in this?</note> At the hall, I said: "Light doesn't see darkness; darkness doesn't see light. Forgetting both light and dark—no different from common teachers. A jackal howls, a lion roars. A lion roars, a jackal howls. In a three-family village, a stinking monkey's price increases tenfold. Beneath the black dragon's chin, the bright moon pearl isn't worth a cent. If you take this as a monk's approach, where would it come from? Thirty years from now, beating your chest with regret—that still isn't the real suffering." <note>In the teaching tradition, these abound like hemp and millet. A monk's approach—only realization knows it.</note> At the hall, I said: "Beside the rice basket, inside the lacquer bucket. If you spit at me, I'll pour water for you. If you curse me, I'll answer back for you. The Yellow River clears once every three thousand years. The flat peach blooms once every five hundred years. Helena grits his teeth. King Red-Top roars with laughter. Guizong's kōan from fifty years ago—today I present it to you all. What kōan is it? Officer Wang lost his summons." <note>Examine carefully. It's not in the lacquer bucket—it must be beside the rice basket.</note> Then I said: "Stop, stop. Each time I examine, each time I lose it. Old sorrows wound the heart—don't mention them at all." At the hall, I said: "The thirty-two marks, the eighty excellent features—from morning to night, chirping and chattering, speaking of yellow and discussing black, not knowing where it is." <note>Xin Yuan here has no place to grasp.</note> At the twice-daily hall, I said: "Eating porridge, eating rice, before you know it you've bitten through your tongue. Blood splashes all over Brahma Heaven. Beneath the four heavens, it overflows in abundance. The Jade Emperor, furious, pursues the East Sea Dragon King to the peak of Golden Wheel Mountain for interrogation. In an instant, he summons all of you as witnesses. Each of you must honestly confess—avoid any evasion. If you're not truthful, you'll lose your lives." <note>If before being summoned you confess everything fully, I will order the Dragon King to drop the case.</note> At the hall, I said: "Zhaozhou drank tea—I'm also afraid of him. If he's not a creditor, he's a sworn enemy. Leaning against walls, clinging to corners, in flocks and groups—who can distinguish dragons from snakes?" <note>Even if you could distinguish them, they'd still be sworn enemies.</note> At the hall, I said: "The five hundred strongmen lift the stone. At the ten-thousand-foot cliff, letting go and walking. The ten-direction world is one mass of iron. On emptiness's back, white hair grows. Even if you took off your greased hat and stripped off your stinking cloth shirt, before Baoyuan's gate you'd still deserve the staff. Why? Rising at midnight to sit with bent knees—the comet star appears before the monk." <note>Alive, sitting without lying down. Dead, lying without sitting. Same stinking bones—what need for daily practice? This says half. Drinking official wine, lying on official street. Dying where you are, buried where you are. That's also only half. In the end, what then? Hey! A great big comet star!</note> At the hall, I said: "The Buddhas of the three times—no sinews in their eyes. The six patriarchs—no blood beneath their skin. Even if Mingguo grits his teeth and leaps, he can't escape their snare. Why? Because Nanquan killed the cat." <figure><graphic url="../figures/X/X85p0272\_01.gif"/></figure><note>There's another person—with neither skin nor eyes. Even the Buddhas and patriarchs have never dreamed of it. Why? Hmm!</note> At the hall, I said: "Those who practice meditation must be careful not to use their minds wrongly. Realizing enlightenment and seeing nature is using the mind wrongly. Becoming a Buddha or a patriarch is using the mind wrongly. Reading sutras and teaching is using the mind wrongly. Walking, standing, sitting, lying down is using the mind wrongly. Eating porridge, eating rice is using the mind wrongly. Shitting and pissing is using the mind wrongly. Every movement, every stillness, every coming and going is using the mind wrongly. There's one more place of wrong mind-use that Guizong dares not reveal to you all. Why? Once a word enters the official gate, nine oxen cannot pull it out." <note>Can't pull it out, can't push it in. Hiding necks, stretching waists—thousands of people, each piercing through mountains and stone walls, banging their heads until they break, splitting their foreheads. The two great doors remain lacquer-black as ever. Ho!</note> At Huqiu's death anniversary, offering incense, I said: "In all my life, no luck—I ran into this old monk with no sense. I used every trick and still couldn't get close to him. From then on I put down my weapons and just wore clothes and ate rice according to circumstances. For twenty years I've sat on my crooked wooden seat, hanging a sheep's head while selling dog meat. Who knows what evidence he has?" <note>With one phrase, the very marrow of the Buddhas and patriarchs is laid bare completely.</note> "Even so—once a year, on this day of incense-burning, through the ages it deepens people's regret." The master could temper even the most seasoned practitioners in his room, so the world called him and Dahui the Two Gates of Sweet Dew. He once cautioned his disciples: "For a monk to wear straw sandals and run a monastery—isn't that just like a snake or worm clinging to its hole?" In the first year of Longxing, on the thirteenth day of the sixth month, he passed away peacefully. His whole body was enshrined in a stupa on the mountain.
