### 杭州府放牛余居士

> Yushi the Cowherd from Hangzhou Prefecture

參無門。凡有問門。皆劈面截曰。不是不是。及見臭菴問曰。吾師何所見。敢對人天顛倒是非耶。菴曰。我在無門處。無法可得。無道可傳。只得兩箇字。士曰。是甚兩字。菴曰。不是不是。士大悟雲門一棒。臨濟一掌。馬祖一喝。巖頭一噓。六祖知非。龐公好殺。子湖狗。楊岐驢。雪峯毬。鼓山劒。石鞏箭。秘魔叉。上來一隊老古錐。未夢見兩箇字在。忽有箇伶俐衲僧出來問。趙州勘破臺山婆子時又如何。心圓即與攔顋一掌。劈面一唾。罵道你者不知香臭漢。

> Consulting with Wumen \[Wumen Huikai\]. Whenever anyone came to ask him a question, he would immediately cut them off face-to-face, saying, "Not that, not that." Later, when he met Chou'an \[Chouan\], he asked, "What has my master seen that he dares to turn right and wrong upside down before the assembly of humans and gods?" Chou'an said, "I am in a place where there is nothing to attain, no Dharma to transmit. I only have two words." The layman asked, "What are those two words?" Chou'an said, "Not that, not that." The layman was greatly enlightened. <note>Yunmen's staff, Linji's slap, Mazu's shout, Yantou's hiss, Huineng's recognizing what is not, Pang's fondness for killing, Zihu's dog, Yangqi's donkey, Xuefeng's ball, Gushan's sword, Shigong's arrow, Mimo's fork. All these old masters from above have never even dreamed of those two words. If suddenly a clever monk comes out and asks, "When Zhaozhou saw through the old woman of Taishan, what then?" Xin Yuan would immediately slap him across the face, spit at him, and scold, "You fellow who doesn't know the difference between fragrance and stench!"</note>
