> In his room, the master taught his disciples, sometimes holding a wooden sword, sometimes holding a brocade snake. Haiyun Jian came to pay his respects. As soon as he entered the gate, he asked, "I have come without coming—how does the master meet me?" The master said, "To practice, you must truly practice; to awaken, you must truly awaken. Don't play at falsehood." Jian said, "Because I struck a stone and sparks flew out, I then knew that my brows are horizontal and my nose is vertical." The master said, "My place here is different." Jian asked, "How can I show proof of my faith?" The master said, "My teeth are a mouthful of bone; my ears are two pieces of skin." <note>Block the head and give one blow</note> Jian said, "I thought there was something else." The master said, "Wrong." Jian shouted, "The grass bandit has suffered a great defeat!" <note>Indeed</note> The master then stopped. The next day, the master brought up the story of Linji's two chief monks both shouting, until the distinction between host and guest was clear, and asked Jian, "How do you understand this?" Jian said, "Breaking the mirror of the Qin dynasty, sharpening the awl of ancient times. The dragon flies beyond the clouds—why need further piercing and sharpening?" <note>If it were a teacher and student of today, they would say 'The guest is always guest, the host always host.' The ancients' entry point was not so cliché.</note> The master said, "You have only grasped the function, not the substance." <note>If it were an ordinary teacher, they would either praise or nod in agreement.</note> Jian then toppled the meditation bench. The master said, "The joy of the road is not yet arriving home." Jian gave a slap and said, "The spirit for a thousand years in the wild fox's den—now that it's seen through, it's not worth a penny." The master gave a whisk and said, "You have only grasped the substance, not the wisdom." Jian stepped forward and said, "The blue mountain rises with cold color; the moon shines on a stream of spring." The master said, "You have only grasped the substance, not the wisdom." Jian said, "The flowing water goes east and west by itself; the falling flowers have no direction." The master said, "Though you are skilled in the samadhi of speech, after all, it's irrelevant." <note>The master's bow and arrows are spent, the disciple's bow and arrows are spent too. But there is one who refuses to concede. One might say, 'Exhausting oneself for the assembly—disaster comes from one's own door.'</note> Jian raised his fist and clapped once, causing the whole room to shake. The master said, "Yes, yes." Jian flicked his sleeve and left. <note>One might say the verification is complete, with not a drop of leakage. But on careful examination, it is still fully leaking. How does a clear-eyed patriarch guide others? Investigate!</note>
