### 新花嚴經卷第二十八

> New Flower Adornment Sutra, Volume 28

翼從上與職反切韻恭也助也爾雅云翼敬也論語云趨進翼如也孔注云言端謹也下疾用反切韻云後也侍也經文或作翊俗用亦通。

> Wings, as in spreading wide. From the context, it signifies respect and assistance. The "Er Ya" defines wings as reverence. In the "Analects," it is said, "Advancing with wings spread wide," which, as Kong's annotation explains, means conducting oneself with utmost propriety and care. The following character, pronounced "ji," signifies following and serving. In the scriptures, it is sometimes written as "yi," which is also acceptable in common usage.

延袤上以然反下莫候反延長也袤廣也如前第七卷經已釋訖。

> Extended and vast<note>“延” is pronounced as “ran” in the upper tone, and “袤” as “hou” in the lower tone. “延” means to extend, “袤” means width. This has already been explained in the seventh volume of the sutra as before.</note>.

殞滅上為敏反聲類云殞沒也爾雅云落也亦作隕左傳星隕如雨是也下亾烈反說文作威解云火從十月亥受氣至九月戌乃死故從火戌也蔡邕加水作滅。

> Perishing<note>“殞” is pronounced as “min” in the reverse-cut method, and the category of sounds indicates that it means "to fall" or "to die." According to the Erya, it means "to fall," and it is also written as "隕." For instance, in the Zuozhuan, it says, "Stars fell like rain." The character "滅” is pronounced as “lie” in the reverse-cut method, and according to the Shuowen, it is written as "威," with the explanation: fire, starting from the tenth month with the character "亥" receiving vital energy, and by the ninth month, in the character "戌," it dies. Therefore, it is composed of "火" and "戌". Cai Yong added the water radical to form "滅".</note>

佞媚上乃定反切韻云諂也論語云雍也仁而不伎郭註爾雅云佞人似信者也下明祕反考聲云悅也美也切韻云姿媚也論語云王孫賈問曰與其媚於奧寧媚於竈也。

> Flattery<note>Here "佞" (nìng) is, according to the rhyme book, defined as "to flatter". The Analects say: "Yong is virtuous but not eloquent." In the Erya commentary, Guo notes: "A flatterer appears trustworthy." The second character "媚" (mèi), as per the Sound Examination, means "to please" or "to charm". The rhyme book defines it as "alluring charm". The Analects record Wang Sun Jia asking: "Better to please the stove god than the corner shrine?"</note>.

愆違上去乾反又作𮘧𠍴𱞖三形皆同爾雅曰逸𮘧過也書云監於先王其永無愆孔注云過也下雨非反字林背也切韻違逆也拒也。

> Transgressions and errors<note>In ancient texts, "愆" (qiān) means faults or mistakes, while "違" (wéi) refers to going against or disobeying. Both words together signify deviations from what is right or proper.</note>.

乞匃下垓艾反顧野王云匃亦乞也考聲云求也古今正字云人亾財則匃也說文云從人亾會意字也古作勹几二形並音人。

> Begging<note>According to "Xia Gai Ai Fan," citing Gu Yewang, "匃" also means to beg. "Kao Sheng" says it means to seek. The "Ancient and Modern Correct Characters" states that when a person loses their wealth, they beg. The "Shuowen" explains it as a character formed from "人" (person) and "亾" (to lose), with old forms written as "勹" and "几", both pronounced "ren".</note>.

猨𤜴上雨元反爾雅曰猱猨善援也下余救反山海經云鬲山多蜼音同上郭璞注云似獼猴而大蒼黑色尾長四五尺似獺尾頭有兩歧天雨則倒懸於樹以尾塞鼻江東養之捕鼠切韻云虫名也亦作󱶫󱳛狖古字有作㹨非。

> Macaque<note>The character "猨" is glossed as "rain, yuan, fanqie"; Erya states: "Nao, yuan; the monkey is good at climbing." The character "𤜴" is glossed as "you, jiu, fanqie"; the Shanhaijing states: "Mount Li has many fei," pronounced the same as above. Guo Pu's commentary says: "Similar to a macaque but larger, dark gray with a tail four or five feet long, resembling an otter's tail. The head has two forks; when it rains, it hangs upside down from trees, using its tail to block its nose. People east of the Yangtze raise them to catch rats." Qieyun says it is an insect name; also written as 狖. The ancient form has 㹨, which is incorrect.</note>

袨服上玄絹反文字集略云盛服也考聲云袨美服字書云袨衣服鮮者也從衣玄聲。
