> Beak\[Note: The pronunciation is "shàng jí wěi fǎn". The character "埤" in the warehouse is written as "𭪿". According to the Shuowen, it's the same as "bird's beak". In the monastic texts, it's written with the "mouth" radical as "嘴", but this character is not found in character dictionaries. Below, "duō guān fǎn" refers to the rhyme. The rhyme books say it means "thread" or "correct". The Kao Sheng says it means "straight". The Shuowen says it means "beginning", derived from "立" with the sound "耑". "耑" is pronounced the same as above, describing something initially born that hasn't yet lifted its head. Its meaning is different from the character "豈", and it's not derived from "山".\]

絞頸上古巧反考聲云絞縛也爾雅云𮈜絞也郭注云糾絞繩索也下居郢反說文云項頸也從頁巠聲也。

> Strangling<note>In ancient usage, "jiǎo" is explained as binding or twisting, as in tying ropes, while "jǐng" refers to the neck, from the character's phonetic component.</note>.

> "Trade"<note>The character is also pronounced "ping" (處陵反), meaning "to weigh" or "to lift." It can also be pronounced "chang" (昌孕反), referring to knowing the weight of things. It derives from the grain radical "禾" and the phonetic "爯" (same pronunciation as above). The lower part is "mo" (莫懈反), with the rhyme dictionary noting it means "to sell goods." The phonetic dictionary explains it as "to buy and sell goods," coming from the radicals "士" and "買."</note>.
