He was a native of Fuzhou. For a long time, he studied under Master Ying’an. One day, while contemplating the gong'an "Zhaozhou's 'Does a dog have Buddha-nature?'", he suddenly had a profound awakening. He composed a verse:
"A dog has no Buddha-nature— The star Rahu marks your fate. If you don't strike to kill, You'll be struck down for sure."
Ying’an praised his verse for its freedom and detachment from convention. Near the end of the Shaoxing era, he passed away peacefully at Guizong Temple.
