### 明州雪竇野雲處南禪師

> Master Chunan of Xuedou Yeyun, Mingzhou

上堂。百計推尋永不見面。一時休去在處逢渠。長連牀上喫粥喫飯取飽為期。我且問你。常住一粒米是幾番過手。上堂。斬釘截銕特地乖張。就下平高衲僧笑具。皇覺到此有理難伸。未審諸公如何理論。上堂。摩醯正眼熈然赫然。一處該通萬機頓赴。縛虎擒龍驚天動地。且平常一句又作麼生。莫把是非來辨我。浮生穿鑿不相關。

> The master ascends the hall and says: "Through countless deliberations, I have never encountered it face to face. But when you let go for a moment, you meet it everywhere. On the long meditation bench, we eat porridge and rice, taking satisfaction as the goal. I ask you: how many hands does a single grain of rice from the monastery's permanent store pass through?" The master ascends the hall and says: "Cutting nails and chopping iron—deliberately going against the grain. Descending from the heights to level the ground—a laughingstock for monks. Here at Huangjue, we have reason but find it hard to articulate. I wonder, how would you all explain it?" The master ascends the hall and says: "The true eye of Maheshvara shines brilliantly, blazing brightly. When one point is penetrated, all functions respond at once. Binding tigers and capturing dragons—startling heaven and shaking earth. But what about an ordinary phrase? Do not use right and wrong to argue with me. The fleeting life of speculation has nothing to do with it."
