> A native of Chaozhou, his family name was Chen, and his mother's surname was Huang. When the venerable Miaoxi traveled south and passed through Chaozhou, the master's grandfather, Xian, received him with great respect. His mother dreamed of a monk entering her home, and then became pregnant. When he was born, his parents vowed not to let worldly affairs burden him. At the age of ten, he was sent to study under the monk Shou. Nine years later, he received ordination and took the tonsure. He first studied under Mu'an Yong, who gave him a taste of the teachings. Later, he went to study under Mi'an at Mount Jiang. One day, during a private interview, Mi'an raised the saying, "Even Shakyamuni and Maitreya are but his servants—tell me, who is this 'he'?" The master replied, "A man without a foothold." Mi'an said, "Hearing a thousand times is not as good as seeing once." The master immediately threw a punch. Mi'an grabbed him and shouted sternly, "You little devil! What have you seen that makes you hit wildly?" The master said, "I'd still give you another punch!" Mi'an swung two punches and said, "I'm hitting this man without a foothold!" The master was suddenly and greatly enlightened. Not long after, he returned home to care for his aging mother. The military governor Zhu Jiang invited him to give his first public teaching at Guangfa Temple. Later, he moved to Taiping and Yinging. One day, ascending the hall, he said: "Rising from the Bodhi tree, visiting Deer Park—this is not the supreme essential. Transmitting the Shaolin lineage, continuing the Caoxi stream—this does not yet make one a man of true action. Only when one is utterly dependent on nothing, desiring nothing, with not a single thought clinging to anything—even then, one is still falling into a secondary view. Let go of that last hold. Whether to unfold or to roll up is mine to command. When I release what is held, the pillar and the lantern leap to life. When I hold what is released, even Shakyamuni and Maitreya are its servants." He struck the staff and said, "Tell me, is this a release or a hold? One breath of qi, wordless, yet containing all forms. How can the ten thousand things repay such selfless grace?" One day, ascending the hall, he raised the saying of Zen Master Tianyi Huai: "The wild goose passes across the vast sky; its shadow sinks into the cold water." He then offered a verse: A lone goose across the vast sky cries out one note of autumn. Persia's jewel-bearing merchant, nose hooked like a hook. The wind rolls white clouds back to another peak— At dusk, the moon hangs from the willow's top. One day, ascending the hall, he said: "The teacher of Vairocana, the lord of the Dharma body—if you want the earth to move and light to shine, come carry firewood and move dirt. Hah! I almost forgot." One day, ascending the hall, he said: "If Baizhang had not gone back to study under Mazu, how could he have been deaf for three days? If Linji had not gone to Dayu, how would he have known the depth of the old woman's compassion? Yangshan obtained the bright pearl that settles the ocean—why, then, when he stood before Dongsi, did he fold his hands at his chest and say he had no principle to present and no words to speak? Hmph! Even if you pour out a whole basketful, I guarantee you still haven't penetrated it fully." One day, ascending the hall, he said: "In famine, a rat bites the gourd. A clever monkey climbs the tree upside down. To break through Bao'en's final barrier, you must take each step lower than the last. If it's the final barrier, then why must each step be lower? When you've actually stepped on it, then I'll tell you." One day, ascending the hall, he said: "Dongshan said, 'The gate of emptiness has a path that all can reach; only those who arrive know how vast its meaning runs. When the mind-ground grows no idle weeds, the body naturally radiates white light.'" The master commented, "Dongshan only knew how to find existence within emptiness; he didn't know how to seek emptiness within existence. Yinging is different. The gate of emptiness has a path that all can reach; only those who arrive see how obstacles become passages. Plant flowers on stone and fruits still ripen—in the end, one never relies on spring wind." As the master approached his final moments, he gathered the assembly and instructed them: "This old monk has nothing of substance. Simply follow the usual custom of the assembly—let me rest peacefully in the hall for two days, and that will be enough." He then wrote a verse, sat upright, and passed away. Three days later, when his body was placed in the monastery, the assembly understood that his final words carried a hidden meaning. He lived seventy years, with fifty-two rainy seasons in the monastic life.
