> A teacher from Hangzhou Liangzhu, of the Liang clan, with his mother's surname being Song. He became a monk under Master Tianlong Gong, and later studied with the monk Yuelin at Wanshou Temple. Yuelin instructed him to contemplate the word "nothing." After six years without any breakthrough, he made a solemn vow: "If I sleep, may my body rot." Whenever he felt drowsy, he would walk in the corridor and bump his head against the support pillars. One day, while near the teaching seat, he suddenly heard the sound of the mealtime drum and experienced a moment of awakening. He composed a verse: "Blue sky, bright sun—a single clap of thunder, The eyes of all living beings suddenly open wide. All myriad forms bow in unison, Mount Sumeru leaps and dances three times." The next day, when he entered the master's room to share his realization, Yuelin immediately said, "Where have you seen spirits or ghosts?" The teacher shouted. Yuelin also shouted. The teacher shouted again. From then on, his use of methods and understanding were perfectly aligned. In the eleventh year of the Jiading era, he began teaching at Anji Baoguo Temple. Later he moved to Longxing Tianning, Huanglong, Cuiyan, Kaiyuan in Suzhou, Lingyan, Jiaoshan in Zhenjiang, and Baoning in Jinling. In the sixth year of the Chunyou era, on imperial orders, he founded Huguo Renhuang Temple. At a public teaching session, he said: "If a person understands the mind, the great earth has not an inch of soil. The ancients spoke this way. But Huanglong says otherwise: If a person understands the mind, the great earth is entirely soil." At another session: "Right and wrong, long and short—these are just wind by the ear. Do not seek differences or sameness within them. To keep the eight winds from blowing you over, Train your mind to be like empty space. "Master Cishou only knew how to sail with the wind, not how to steer against it. Huanglong, however, says otherwise. All right and wrong—set them aside, yet find them within. Why? Many times black winds have stirred great waves, but never has a fishing boat been heard to capsize." At another session: "Three parts of the day, two have already passed. The cow in Huaizhou eats grain. The single point of spirit—if not polished. The horse in Yizhou has a swollen belly. Clinging to life, day after day, hurrying along. Searching for doctors across the land. Called but not turning back—what can be done? Cauterize the left shoulder of the roasted pig. If you grasp this, your study is complete. If not, I'll take up the staff and ask Wood Senior to explain it for you." He struck the staff and descended from the seat. At another session: "Master Zhaozhou said, 'To those who come from the south, give them a load off; to those who come from the north, give them a load on.' This seems like treating people according to fortune—faces rising and falling with status. Master Cishou said, 'To those who come from the south, give them a smile; to those who come from the north, give them a smile.' This seems like killing with joy—a knife hidden in the smile. As for Jiaoshan, it is different. To those from the south, treat them with ordinary equanimity. To those from the north, treat them with ordinary equanimity. No anger, no smiles. No high, no low. Why? In a peaceful world, weapons are not needed." He composed a verse on the morning sun: "When cold arrives, what is urgently needed? Seize the warmth and do some sewing. When the twelfth month suddenly comes, You won't be caught scrambling in confusion." A verse on the moon: "At first, only a glimmer of light is seen. To finish the final stretch, If the fist of the gateless one were used, It wouldn't strike such dullards." In his later years, the teacher grew weary of the teaching life and retired to a hermitage by West Lake. Still, many seekers of the Way came to him. Emperor Lizong summoned him to the Xuande Hall to give teachings, and when he prayed for rain, it came in response. The emperor bestowed upon him a golden robe and the title "Buddha Eye."
