> Nankang Zhou family's son, born on the first day of the eighth month in the first year of Duanping. At thirteen, he bid farewell to his parents and became a monk under Master Yan at Jiarui Temple in the prefecture, shaving his head and receiving full ordination. One day, while reading the Avatamsaka Sutra, he came upon the line: "The sole, secret, and enduring body manifests within all atoms of dust." Suddenly, he had an awakening. He immediately went to see Bieshan Zhi at Jiangshan and asked, "Where have you come from recently?" The master said, "From Jiangxi." Bieshan said, "Is Horse Master well?" The master, with palms joined, stepped forward and said, "I pay respects to the abbot." Bieshan had him serve in the attendants' quarters. Not long after, he went to Hangzhou and saw Duanqiao Lun at Jingci Temple. He asked, "Is it true that Linji received painful blows from Huangbo three times?" The master said, "Yes." Duanqiao said, "Then why did Dahui strike three times beneath his ribs?" The master said, "If you receive a cow from someone, you return a horse to them." Duanqiao nodded. When Duanqiao passed away, Baishan Jieshi took his place. One day, in the abbot's chamber, Jieshi raised the saying, "The cypress tree in front of the courtyard." When the master hesitated, Jieshi raised his voice and said, "Why not say, 'Parrot Island in front of Yellow Crane Tower'?" At these words, the master was suddenly enlightened on the spot. Jieshi then appointed him to serve the incense. After a long time, he returned to Mount Lu's Eastern Cliff. The abbot of Yuanzhi Temple invited him to share the teaching seat. The governor of Jiujiang, Qian Zhensun, appointed the master to become the abbot of Xilin Temple. In the twenty-fifth year of Zhiyuan, he moved to Kaixian Temple, and later to Donglin. At the beginning of Yuanzhen, he was summoned by imperial edict to the capital. His audience with the emperor pleased the ruler, who granted him a jade seal and the title of Chan Master Tonghui, along with a gold-patterned robe. In the ninth year of Dade, he was promoted to be the abbot of Lingyin Temple. Once he tested a monk, saying, "The countless Buddhas are on your tongue; the entire Tripitaka sacred teachings are beneath your feet. Why don't you wake up?" The monk was at a loss, and the master gave a shout. He tested another monk, saying, "Shakyamuni and Maitreya are his servants. Who is he?" As the monk tried to answer, the master struck him. A monk newly arrived. The master asked, "Where have you come from?" The monk said, "From Fujian." The master said, "How do you conduct yourself there?" The monk said, "When hungry, we eat; when tired, we sleep." The master said, "Wrong." The monk said, "I wonder, how does the master conduct himself here?" The master flicked his sleeves and returned to his quarters. After four years there, he passed away. His final gatha to the assembled monks said: "Gathering by conditions we come, Scattering by conditions we go. Toppling Mount Sumeru, In empty space, alone and clear." He lived seventy-five years, with fifty-two rainy seasons as a monk.
