### 建寧府蔣山慧空元模禪師

> Master Yuanmo Huikong of Jiangshan Temple in Jianning Prefecture

古田蘇氏子。大德庚子定中遊蔣山玄獎禪師道場。有老人迎謁曰。吾為師守此山五百秊矣。言畢化黑龍而去。既寤乃曰吾當還此山也。遂往卓菴。一日謂眾曰。吾昔於佛所。號慧空菩薩。今化緣既畢。即當入滅。因為眾說四諦法。復說偈曰。四十餘秊寄俗塵。如今却顯箇中尊。巖頭一夜東風起。吹得華開滿樹春。銕船無柁亦無蓬。撐入金蓮性海中。末後一機今說破。白雲元不離長空。大地山河覓無跡。虗空撞破見端的。縱使銕輪頂上旋。本性圓明常不失。復曰。西天第三代商那和修尊者隱象白山。現龍奮迅三昧。說法調伏諸外道。然後化火自焚。吾今象鼻巖前亦當如是。言畢雲霧四起。雷雨大作。化火自焚。塔于菴之西。

> In the year of Gengzi during the Dade era, a layman from the Su family in Gutian entered a deep meditative state and visited the monastic site of Zen Master Xuanjiang on Jiang Mountain. An old man came forward to greet him, saying, "I have guarded this mountain for you for five hundred years." With these words, he transformed into a black dragon and disappeared. Upon waking, he said, "I shall return to this mountain." He then went there and built a hermitage. One day, he told his disciples, "In the presence of the Buddha, I was known as the Bodhisattva Hui Kong. My work in this world is now complete, and it is time for me to enter final liberation." He then expounded the Four Noble Truths and offered this verse: "Over forty years I dwelt in the mundane world, Now I reveal the true nature within. A night breeze from the cliff arises, Blossoms bloom, filling the trees with spring. The iron boat has neither rudder nor sail, Yet it sails into the golden lotus sea of inherent nature. The final opportunity is now revealed: White clouds have never left the vast sky. No trace can be found in mountains and rivers, Even the void is shattered to reveal the truth. Should an iron wheel spin above my head, My luminous original nature remains forever undimmed." He continued, "The Third Patriarch of the Western Heaven, Venerable Shangna Heshu, once dwelled in Elephant White Mountain, where he manifested the Samadhi of the Dragon's Dynamic Awakening, taught the Dharma to tame all heretics, and then entered fire to cremate his own body. I shall now do the same before the Elephant Trunk Cliff." With these words, clouds and mist gathered from all directions, thunder and rain roared, and he entered fire to cremate his own body. A stupa was built to the west of the hermitage.
