述曰。佛法之妙莫要於淨土。淨土之妙莫要於持名。持名之妙莫要於小本阿彌陀經。小本之妙莫要於靈峰要解。儻未讀要解。或讀未精詳。或精詳未貫徹。便謂於小本無不知無不信無不悟入。可乎。既於本經有未盡。一行三昧如何修行。既未善持名。淨土玄關如何優入。既未階淨信淨願。十方三世佛祖大道如何荷擔。然則要解之有關於十方三世佛祖大道也甚矣。今定十要以要解為上首。厥義有三。一祖佛經以小本為淨土諸經之最要故。二重持名以末法修行總以持名為行本故。三立本經之大宗以今解精徹確正堪為要中之要。故讀十要者請以要解為主。以餘九為伴。能令邪解莫入。能令意見不容。能令心宗圓明。能令美善雙盡。夫然後不愧為真學佛者。夫然後不自誤誤人。夫然後必生淨土。夫然後可學一切佛法。夫然後知十方三世佛祖之大道舉不外乎此矣。

> This is said: There is no more profound teaching in the Buddhadharma than the Pure Land, and no more profound teaching in the Pure Land than mindfulness of the Buddha's name, and no more profound approach to this practice than the Shorter Amitabha Sutra, and no more profound commentary on that Sutra than Master Ouyi's \*Essential Explanation\*. If one has not read this \*Essential Explanation\*, or has read it without thorough understanding, or has grasped it in part but not fully realized it—can they truly claim to know, believe, and have awakened to the Shorter Amitabha Sutra without any deficiency? If one has not fully understood this Sutra, how can they practice the Samadhi of One Practice? If one has not mastered mindfulness of the Buddha's name, how can they enter the mysterious gateway of the Pure Land? If one has not yet established pure faith and pure vows, how can they shoulder the great Way of all Buddhas and Patriarchs throughout the ten directions and three times? Thus, the \*Essential Explanation\* is profoundly crucial to the great Way of all Buddhas and Patriarchs. Now, in compiling these Ten Essential Texts, we place Ouyi's \*Essential Explanation\* at the very head. This decision has three meanings: First, to honor the Buddha's sutras—since the Shorter Amitabha Sutra is the most essential among all Pure Land texts. Second, to emphasize the practice of mindful recitation—since in the final Dharma age, taking up the name is the fundamental basis for all cultivation. Third, to establish the core teaching of this Sutra—since this commentary is precise, thorough, accurate, and proper, making it truly the essential within the essential. Therefore, when reading these Ten Essential Texts, please take the \*Essential Explanation\* as the primary guide and the other nine texts as companions. This approach can ward off mistaken views, eliminate biased opinions, bring the mind's treasury to perfect clarity, and fully realize both goodness and beauty. Only then can we be true students of the Buddha, without deceiving ourselves or misleading others. Only then will we surely be reborn in the Pure Land. Only then can we begin to study all Buddhadharma. Only then will we realize that the great Way of all Buddhas and Patriarchs throughout the ten directions and three times is contained entirely within this.
