原夫諸佛憫念羣迷隨機施化。雖歸元無二而方便多門。然於一切方便中求其至直捷至圓頓者。莫若念佛求生淨土。又於一切念佛法門中求其至簡易至穩當者。莫若信願專持名號。是故淨土三經竝行。古人獨以彌陀經為日課。豈非持名一法普被三根。攝事理無遺。統宗教無外。尤不可思議也哉。註疏代不乏人。世湮所存無幾。雲棲疏鈔廣大精微。幽谿圓中鈔高深洪博。如二曜中天有目皆覩。特以文富義繁邊涯莫測。致初機淺識信願難階。故弗揣庸愚再述要解。不敢與二翁競異。亦不敢與二翁強同也。將釋經文五重玄義。

> The Buddhas, out of great compassion, observe all sentient beings and teach according to their capacities. Though the ultimate truth is one, the skillful means to reveal it are many. Among all these means, none is more direct, complete, and immediate than the practice of mindfulness of the Buddha and seeking rebirth in the Pure Land. And within all methods of Buddha-mindfulness, none is simpler, more accessible, and more reliable than wholeheartedly reciting the Buddha's name with faith and aspiration. Thus, while the three Pure Land sutras are all practiced, the ancients especially took the Amitabha Sutra as their daily practice. Is this not because the recitation of the Buddha's name is a method that embraces all capacities, encompasses both principle and practice, and unifies all teachings? It is truly inconceivable! Commentaries and explanations have been written throughout the ages, though few survive today. The \*Commentary on the Amitabha Sutra\* by Master Yunqi is vast and profound, while Master Youxi's \*Perfect Middle Commentary\* is lofty and expansive. Like the sun and moon shining in the sky, they are visible to all who have eyes. Yet their rich language and deep meanings can be overwhelming, making it difficult for beginners and those with limited understanding to develop faith and aspiration. Therefore, despite my own limitations, I have composed this \*Essential Explanation\*, not seeking to differ from these two masters, nor forcing agreement with them, but simply to offer a clear and accessible guide. Before explaining the sutra text, I will discuss the five profound meanings.
