> Chapter 2: The Gate of Proper Cultivation and Vows

> Briefly, there are four gates \[to cultivation\]. First, repentance and reverence. Second, the ten recitations. Third, sustained mindfulness. Fourth, collective good deeds. For complete cultivation practice, only these four are needed. First, bow to the Buddhas to purify karmic obstacles, making body and mind bright and pure—like clearing a good field. Next, through the ten recitations, settle the mind, establish practice, and set vows and aspirations to secure the direct cause for rebirth—like sowing seeds. Then, focus the mind, nurture and protect it, fostering sprouts and stems—like a timely nourishing rain. Finally, collective good deeds help it flourish, speeding the growth of flowers and fruit—like applying rich fertilizer. Cultivating all four is supreme and excellent. But if time is limited, practicing three, two, or even one will still lead one to that Pure Land. This is because each of the four gates contains both practice and vows, all of which are direct causes \[of rebirth\]. One may also perform repentance on the six fast days and practice the ten recitations daily—for the ten recitations are a pure cause, essential and never to be neglected. The latter two gates \[sustained mindfulness and collective good deeds\] can be done according to one's capacity. If not possible, just follow one's inclination and practice accordingly.
