## 靈峰蕅益大師選定淨土十要卷第四

> Pure Land Ten Essentials, Volume 4, Selected by Master Ouyi of Lingfeng

述曰。列次淨土十要。以教經居初。以行經居次二次三。皆尊經以明道也。若夫作論通經闡揚淨土。則當以天台智者大師十疑論奉為頍弁。厥義有三。一。智者乃釋迦後身人。是大聖故。二。陳隋之世接踵遠祖。時亦在先故。三。此十問答統淨宗一切疑問。振菩提大道之綱。斷疑生信厥功最巨。故雖後世種種異見像季未生其間。破立未能盡應末法邪僻之病。而綱宗所被何疑不遣。故次教行二經。列當論部之首。

> The ten essential texts on the Pure Land are arranged as follows: the teaching sutra comes first, followed by the practice sutra as second and third. Both of these honor the sutras themselves to illuminate the path. As for composing treatises and commentaries to unfold the meaning of the sutras and propagate the Pure Land, we must place the \*Ten Doubts Treatise\* by the Great Master Tiantai Zhiyi at the very forefront. There are three reasons for this: First, Master Zhiyi is recognized as a reincarnation of Shakyamuni Buddha, making him a great sage. Second, he lived in the Chen and Sui dynasties, closely following the time of our distant founder (Huiyuan), and thus was early in the tradition. Third, these ten questions and answers cover all the doubts of the Pure Land school, grasping the essential framework of the great Bodhi path. In dispelling doubts and generating faith, this work has the greatest merit. Therefore, even though later generations of various erroneous views and the declining age had not yet fully emerged, and his refutations and affirmations may not completely cure all the corrupt diseases of the final Dharma period, the fundamental principles laid down here leave no doubt unresolved. Thus, after the teaching and practice sutras, this treatise is placed at the head of the commentary section.
