> Preface to Questions on Pure Land

> Investigating Chan is not something I abandon. Reciting the Buddha’s name is also not something to reject. Chan focuses on seeing one’s true nature, while Buddha-recitation aims to transcend worldly defilements. In my view, the practice of Buddha-recitation is indeed a common path shared by both Chan and doctrinal schools, as well as a shortcut suitable for both scholars and ordinary people. How could one not have faith in it? Students of the world: Those who practice Chan may develop Chan sickness; those who seek Buddhahood may encounter Buddha-demons. This is only because we are far from the era of the sages, and the various streams of teachings have diverged. Such problems appear everywhere—who can put a stop to them? In the Yuan dynasty, the Chan master Tianru Ze fully understood both the teachings and the essential principles, serving as a model for both monastics and laity. He can be described as one who unsheathes his precious sword to cut down injustice, or who dispenses medicine from a golden bottle to cure chronic ailments. Thus, within what seemed beyond doubt, he skillfully set up points of inquiry, and where there were no questions to ask, he raised them. He titled his work \*Questions on the Pure Land\*, totaling twenty-six entries. This is what is meant by "uprooting the source, blocking the stream, and thoroughly investigating all thoughts and discriminations." If one can truly have faith, and maintain a pure thought without interruption, then the Western Pure Land will be visible right before one's eyes, and the mind will take refuge there. In that case, why would words be necessary? However, if one clings to false views and distorted interpretations, unable to distinguish the beautiful from the ugly, lost in broad daylight and heading in the wrong direction, then these writings serve as a compass. Now, the disciple Hongci has raised funds to circulate this text widely. Not only does it share the way with those who cultivate pure karma in the world, but it also serves as an exhortation for those who do not yet have faith.
