Still, I thought that Pure Land practice and Chan were like spring orchids and autumn chrysanthemums—each beautiful in its own way, with no need to compare them. I did not yet realize that Pure Land practice \*is\* the unsurpassed, profound, and wondrous Chan itself. In the winter of 1407, I climbed to the Patriarch Hall to pay respects to Master Ouyi. There I heard his teaching that Chan and Pure Land are not two. He said they cannot be separated, and there is no need to unite them. I admired this idea but secretly doubted it. Now, having read \*The Direct Pointers for Buddha Recitation\*, I finally believe that Master Ouyi was not speaking from empty speculation. I also trust that Master Yongming’s famous four-line verse was no deception. Therefore, I have earnestly gathered donations to print and circulate this text, and many friends have joyfully contributed. We should recognize that Amitabha Buddha’s vast vow-power has long permeated people’s hearts. We humbly wish that, through this virtuous accomplishment, the remaining karmic bonds of the Saha world be cleansed, and we be reborn early in the precious pools of Ultimate Bliss. May we awaken the Bodhi mind, receive the Buddha's prophecy of enlightenment, and together with all beings, return to the boundless ocean of nirvana's eternal awareness.
