> Four Reliances Based on Nature

> All sentient beings possess this pure nature inherently. It is like a single piece of refined gold: when crafted into a hairpin, bracelet, or a chamber pot, the gold’s essence remains one. The chamber pot contains filth, yet the filth is not the gold itself. The same principle applies to sentient beings and Buddhas—they share one pure nature, differing only in form, like the hairpin, bracelet, or chamber pot, not in essence. Thus, an ordinary person can be reborn through ten recitations because their nature is fundamentally pure. Amitabha Buddha can embrace these beings because they are inherently pure at their core. This is like the light within a mirror: it is not obtained by polishing, nor does it arise from polishing. Likewise, birth in the Pure Land is not achieved through vows, practices, or the power of recitation alone. Why? Because thoughts and practices are mere tools—like a furnace and hammer—that can only refine existing gold, not create new gold.
