> Five Types of Beings Who Follow the Buddha

> To please children, one uses bamboo horses. To please the elderly, one uses staffs with dove-shaped handles. What ordinary beings value most are jewels, treasures, clothing, and food. Therefore, there are naturally occurring wonders: jeweled towers, magnificent garments, and fine food. This is like the children in the burning house who would not leave unless promised goat carts, deer carts, and ox carts. Once they are out, they are given only the great ox cart. The Tathagata adapts to the inclinations of beings and speaks of Amitabha's jeweled pure land. When beings are reborn there, each one personally sees subtle, pure, and wonderful appearances that are beyond compare. Only then do they realize that lapis lazuli and coral are like pebbles and broken tiles. This is like a high official or noble telling a farm boy about the splendor of a royal palace. For now, he uses the most extraordinary things the boy can imagine as a point of reference. But the reality is far beyond the boy's comprehension. It is like trying to describe color to someone born blind—no comparison is of any use.
