> The Six Entrances Are Empty of Self-Nature

> The Treatise on Wisdom tells a story: There was a child who loved to play in filth. He piled up dirt pretending it was grain, and used grass and wood as birds and animals. If anyone tried to take them away, he would cry and throw a tantrum. His father thought, "This attachment is easy to break—as he grows up, he'll naturally let it go." Sentient beings are attached to their impure, stinking bodies and to the various pleasures of the five senses. But when the five faculties of faith, effort, mindfulness, concentration, and wisdom become fully developed, they can let go. Why? If what the child was attached to were truly real, even after a hundred years his attachment would only deepen. Similarly, if what sentient beings are attached to had real existence, even after developing the five faculties they could not give it up. However, because all phenomena are empty and illusory, without true substance, what sentient beings are attached to can easily be corrected. For example, when people are young they are delighted by beauty; in their prime they are obsessed with power and status; in old age they cling to profit. If any of these were truly worthy of attachment, one's preferences should not change from year to year, from month to month. Because they do change, they are merely illusions of the mind—like someone dreaming, who can be awakened when called. If the dream were real, calling out would do no good. But since neither the dream nor the attachment is real, awakening is possible. Therefore, the Buddha taught the Pure Land method for all sentient beings.
