> Chapter 4: Classification of Teachings

> The entire scriptural canon is like a vessel holding space. Space itself has no fixed form, but vessels come in shapes round or square. When the vessel is gone, space returns to its undifferentiated state; when teachings are set aside, the scriptures are forgotten. Therefore, responding to circumstances universally, nirvana and suchness are like one vessel. Wielding wisdom with freedom, names and forms are held as one space. Medicine has no fixed prescription; a fixed prescription is based on the illness. Can jade powder and coral treat all four hundred and four diseases? When the illness is cured, the medicine is valued—even excrement can become ambrosia. For different symptoms with the same prescription, ginseng and lingzhi can turn into poison. How much more so for the Supreme King of Healers, who administers the medicine of the three vehicles for transcending the world, to heal the wounds of ordinary beings, celestial beings, and lesser saints? Ancient masters set forth teachings, sometimes as one, sometimes as many. Though names and forms differ, the principle is the same. I, a humble practitioner, not measuring my own limitations, humbly follow the ancient sages in distinguishing various points to illuminate the one vehicle. This is so that people may know that the Pure Land Dharma door encompasses the teachings of the entire age, and not be deceived by the confused Zen tradition or the frivolous scholasticism.

> <note>The "Purely Existent" corresponds to the Human and Heavenly Vehicles. The following five stages—Tendency toward Quiescence and so on—correspond to the Small, Initial, Final, Sudden, and Complete (Perfect) Teachings. If we are to classify teachings, we must use the Four Methods of Conversion, the Four Doctrines of Content, and the General and Specific Five Periods to fully encompass all the Dharma teachings taught by the Buddha over his lifetime. Simply relying on the Five Teachings alone is still open to discussion. Master Zhonglang passed away in his forties and never entered the halls of the Tiantai School. Furthermore, the "Purely Existent" cannot lead one to transcendence, so it cannot be established as a separate teaching; it can only be categorized under the Tripitaka (Storehouse) Teaching.</note>
