> Chapter 5: The Principle of Ultimate Truth

> Nature and form are one; they are neither existent nor nonexistent. The gate of principle and phenomena allows the interplay of both negation and manifestation. When we speak of "nonexistence," it is like the moon in water or a flower in a mirror—not like a turtle's fur or a rabbit's horn. When we speak of "existence," it is like wind moving or clouds rising—not like rocks blocking or metal being hard. Thus, if you cling to concepts and appearances, you are an ordinary person bound by desire. If you reject cause and effect, you are an outsider following the false view of emptiness. Even the Buddha-land in a dream is worth aspiring to be reborn in; even the sages and saints like bubbles or shadows are worthy of veneration. To discuss truth or illusion is like adding a wound to a scar; to speak of existence or nonexistence is like snow melting on a furnace. Therefore, based on ultimate truth, let us distinguish the four approaches.
