> One who practices with faith

> The sutra says: Faith is the source of the Way and the mother of merits. It is the true cause of all practices, and even the complete fruition of enlightenment merely fulfills this root of faith. Just as a grain of seed, once planted in the ground, remains identical to its original seed until it bears fruit, or as a young bamboo shoot, as it grows into a towering bamboo with dense leaves, is still fundamentally the same stem, so too does a beginning bodhisattva rely entirely on the power of faith to achieve fulfillment. The Pure Land tradition especially regards faith as its foundation: 1. Believe that Amitabha's unmoving wisdom and fundamental wisdom are no different from your own. Like the vast empty sky—when the sun shines, it becomes bright; when clouds come, it becomes dim. The sky itself is originally free from these conditions. Moreover, the sun and clouds are one with the sky. 2. Believe that Amitabha’s countless eons of difficult practices and endurance—all kinds of cultivation—you too are able to practice. Why? Because since beginningless time, you have drifted and sunk in the three unfortunate realms, enduring the suffering of birth and death, taking on animal forms, lying on iron beds, clinging to copper pillars; you have been able to bear all kinds of meaningless suffering. How could you now be unable to carry out the myriad practices of a bodhisattva benefiting sentient beings? 3. Believe that Amitabha's infinite wisdom, infinite supernatural powers, and the fulfillment of infinite vows and deeds—you too shall attain. The Tathagata’s own nature skillfully possesses such inconceivable qualities. Because you and the Tathagata share the same pure nature. 4. Believe that Amitabha neither comes nor goes. You too neither come nor go. The Pure Land in the West is not separated from this world by even a hair’s breadth. If you wish to see it, you shall see it immediately. Why? Because all Buddhas regard the Dharma-nature as both their body and their land. 5. Believe that Amitabha, through countless eons of practice, attains enlightenment without moving an instant from that moment. You too do not move an instant, and rank equally with all Buddhas. Why? Because time is simply karma. In the ocean of the Dharma-realm, karma cannot be found. Such understanding and faith constitute the beginner’s mind on the path. They are the basis for believing in the practices of the Pure Land of all Buddhas.
