> Six Perfections Practitioner

> The \*Awakening of Faith\* says: Know that the nature of Dharma is free from stinginess and greed, so practice giving accordingly. Know that the nature of Dharma is undefiled, free from the faults of the five desires, so practice morality accordingly. Know that the nature of Dharma is free from suffering and anger, so practice patience accordingly. Know that the nature of Dharma has no form of body or mind, free from laziness, so practice diligence accordingly. Know that the nature of Dharma is always calm, its essence without confusion, so practice meditation accordingly. Know that the nature of Dharma is luminous, free from ignorance, so practice wisdom accordingly. The \*Treatise on the Great Perfection of Wisdom\* says: A bodhisattva sees all phenomena as ultimately empty. Because of this, stinginess and greed do not arise. In ultimate emptiness, there is no stinginess or greed; their root is cut off. The same applies up to wisdom: in ultimate emptiness, there is never a foolish mind. Moreover, although the bodhisattva does not see a giver, they give with a pure, empty mind, thinking: "This gift has no substance; I give it only because sentient beings need it." It is like a child treating dirt as gold—an elder does not see it as gold but gives it freely, without really giving anything. The same applies to the other five perfections. This is what is meant by a bodhisattva practicing the six perfections. For those who cultivate the Pure Land, even one practice can encompass these six qualities: - With each thought detached, they practice giving. - With each thought pure, they practice morality. - With each thought still, they practice patience. - With each thought continuous, they practice diligence. - With each thought unified, they practice meditation. - With each thought of the Buddha, they practice wisdom. Know that detachment, purity, stillness, continuity, and unity must have a concrete form that arises according to conditions—and all of it flows from mindfulness of the Buddha. The primary and the auxiliary are not two. Principle and phenomena are not two. Therefore, the single practice of mindfulness of the Buddha can encompass all practices. Because mindfulness of the Buddha is the Dharma gate of the one mind—outside the mind, there are no other practices. If you were to discard all practices, that would be equivalent to discarding the mind itself.
