### 第七往生門

> Chapter 7: The Gate of Rebirth

夫究竟涅槃唯除如來。二乘破有執空。假名寂滅。菩薩發真無漏。分破無明。何況劣根淺解大海一滴。輒逞狂慧斷無後有。以恣情為遊戲。以修行為纏縛。自殺殺他。何異酖毒。佛世一比丘得四禪。生增上慢。謂得羅漢。命欲盡時。見四禪中陰相現。便生邪見。謂無涅槃。佛欺我。惡邪生故。四禪中陰滅。泥犁中陰生。即墮阿鼻。坐禪持戒之流。一念妄證遂沉黑獄。而今禪人得少為足。蕩心逸軌。其惡報又當如何也。古云。不生淨土何土可生。三祇途遠。餘門多有退墮。古今聖流皆主此門。今略示六種以定指南。

> The ultimate Nirvana is only attained by the Tathagata. Those of the Two Vehicles cling to being and grasp at emptiness, calling their temporary stillness "cessation." Bodhisattvas awaken true non-outflow wisdom and gradually cut through ignorance. How much worse is it for those of shallow understanding, who taste just a drop of the great ocean, then recklessly flaunt their wild "wisdom," claiming there will be no further existence? They treat indulgence as play, see practice as bondage, and harm themselves and others—this is no different from drinking poison. During the Buddha's time, a monk attained the fourth level of meditative absorption and developed arrogance, believing he had reached arhatship. As his life was ending, he perceived the signs of the intermediate state of the fourth dhyana. Then false views arose: he thought there was no Nirvana and that the Buddha had deceived him. Because of this evil view, the intermediate state of the fourth dhyana vanished, and the intermediate state of hell appeared, causing him to fall into the Avici hell. Even those devoted to meditation and precepts, if they mistakenly claim realization in a single thought, sink into the dark abyss. What, then, of those Chan practitioners who are satisfied with little, drift carelessly, and break the rules? Their karmic retribution will be even worse. An ancient master said: "If one is not reborn in the Pure Land, what land can be reborn into?" The path of the Three Asankhya Kalpas is long, and other methods often involve regression. Sages and saints throughout history have therefore upheld this path. Now I briefly present six points to serve as a clear guide.
