> A Bodhisattva Born Among Humans

> The Perfection of Wisdom Sutra says: There are bodhisattvas who, after dying as humans, are reborn again as humans—except for the \*avaivartika\* (those irreversible in enlightenment). These bodhisattvas have dull faculties and cannot quickly align with the Perfection of Wisdom, nor can they bring forth the gates of \*dhāraṇī\* or \*samādhi\* swiftly. The human realm is a house ablaze, tangled with a hundred kinds of suffering. Only a great bodhisattva can dwell there without being stained, like a goose entering water without getting wet. As for lesser bodhisattvas—unless they have deeply planted good roots, they advance an inch and retreat a foot. How could they ever attain \*samādhi\*? Shariputra once practiced the bodhisattva path for sixty kalpas. When someone asked for his eye, he gave one. But the man sniffed it, spat on it, threw it to the ground, and stomped on it. Shariputra thought: “Such a wretched person is impossible to save. Better to train myself and escape birth and death early.” With this thought, he retreated to the Lesser Vehicle. A flying immortal lost all his supernatural powers when the king’s wife touched his hand. In a past life, Mañjuśrī approached a prostitute with honeyed cakes and intoxicants. Even sages and saints can fall—how much more so a beginner? How much better, then, to focus one’s thoughts on Amitabha and realize \*samādhi\* swiftly, placing one’s being in a lotus and forever leaving behind desire! The \*Mahāprajñāpāramitā-śāstra\* says: Bodhisattvas who do not see the present Buddha have dull faculties. This means bodhisattvas should always dwell near the Buddha, for through proximity to the Buddha, they gain sharp faculties and quickly attain the Perfection of Wisdom.
