Where would they pray to be reborn?" Layman Pang said, "In worldly terms, the Pure Land is said to be hundreds of thousands of miles away, across an endless ocean. The moment you stir, a black wind arises." Because of this, some ignorant people, passing along empty talk, say that the Pure Land is not worth cultivating. They obstruct both themselves and others, which is truly pitiable. From the perspective of the Chan tradition, there isn't even a Buddha, let alone a Buddha-land. In order to break through conceptual attachments and illuminate the true mind, both "right" and "wrong" are cut away entirely. A razor-sharp blade cuts your hand if you grip it too tightly. A diamond-like thorn cake will choke you if you try to swallow it whole. There are many such statements in the Chan tradition. If you cling to them literally, are you saying that the Buddha himself should be fed to the dogs of Yunmen? Furthermore, the Buddha is sometimes called "a dry piece of shit." If that were taken literally, should we then worship and make offerings to garbage trucks and latrines? The \*Commentary on the Sutra\* says that Amitabha's Pure Land is hundreds of thousands of millions of lands away. The \*Platform Sutra\* says it is 108,000 miles away—this is a mistake, confusing India (the Western Regions) with the Pure Land. The Sixth Patriarch had not studied the entire Buddhist canon, so it's plausible that when he heard "the West," he thought of India. Yet the sutras clearly state that in the Pure Land, the three poisons do not arise, and one attains non-retrogression. As for the Sixth Patriarch saying "If people in the West commit wrongs, where would they pray to be reborn?" —this is like a slap with no good aim. He only wanted to make a point, regardless of how rough the argument was. Still, such expedient words from the Chan tradition are not worth disputing. If a practitioner can indeed attain sudden enlightenment and cultivate accordingly, with understanding and practice in harmony—like the Sixth Patriarch, or like Layman Pang who played freely with life and death at the Han River—then even if they do not seek rebirth, how could rebirth harm them?The Sixth Patriarch and Layman Pang: how could seeking rebirth in the West ever harm them? A timeless truth.
