> Eight Types of Mental Degradation

> Someone says: "The Pure Land of one's own nature means that the ordinary is actually the true. The seven treasures and broken tiles are equal on one path. Thorns are jeweled trees. Ducks and chickens are all rare birds. If we speak according to principle, we need only purify our own mind—why make distinctions?" Answer: You say that when the mind is pure, the land is pure, and no distinctions are needed. Then if I led you into a latrine, could you stay there long? If you entered a corpse ground, where foul air burns and stings, would you not cover your nose? If you were given the same bowl, bed, and mat as a person covered with scabs, pus, and blood, could you share them? If you cannot, then this shows you are averse to the features of the Five Turbidities. If you still prefer a clean room and enjoy the company of pure companions, this shows you are drawn to the features of the Pure Land. Your attraction and aversion are blazing strong—how can this be called "equality"? Even if you could tolerate filth and impurity without seeking to escape, then dung beetles, crows, and dogs can also get close to these various things—does that mean they have all attained the Way? If you claim to have abandoned both purity and filth, yet still make choices, that contradicts the principle of mind-only. Therefore, you should understand: because of mind-only, the Buddhas produce attraction and aversion. Because of mind-only, they speak of equality. Because of mind-only, they adorn the Buddha land. If it were not mind-only, how could it follow thought? If it were not equality, ordinary beings would have no share. If you do not abandon filth, why abandon purity alone? Since abandoning is mind, why is accepting any different? All such errors come from not understanding the Buddha's intent, leading to these stubborn attachments. Simply recognize mind-only, and these doubts will be dispelled.
