> One Who Is Truly Awakened

> To be born in the Pure Land, you should awaken according to the Dharma. Awakening is the guide through confusion, like lighting a lamp in darkness; it is the map to the Pure Land, like knowing the stations on a long journey. It leads all practices, like following a general into battle. First: Awakening understands that filth and purity are one, not clinging to purity. Second: Hearing that the Pure Land is inconceivable without fear. Third: Knowing that causes and effects are not lost in ultimate emptiness, and therefore stopping all evil, never again committing it. Fourth: Knowing that the Pure Land neither comes nor goes, and we neither come nor go. Fifth: Awakening to the Buddha’s body pervading space, just as sentient beings’ bodies pervade space—like the power of hellish karma, filling one person just as it fills many. Sixth: Hearing about countless eons of practices, yet seeing them like a snap of the fingers, without alarm. Seventh: Cultivating the ten good deeds and three kinds of blessings, without clinging to human or heavenly reward. Eighth: Seeing everything like remembering a dream, without taking it as real or unreal. Ninth: Seeing clearly like one’s hometown, where belief or disbelief cannot be grasped. Tenth: Knowing that dharmas have no self, and benefiting beings in accordance with nature, tirelessly until enlightenment. Bodhisattvas who enter this gate achieve pure virtue and are born freely. Thus, the \*Contemplation Sutra\* speaks of the highest grade, with deep understanding of the meaning, remaining unmoved by the ultimate truth. The commentary says: “Ultimate truth means the true nature of all dharmas, beyond words and mental activity.” And: “A peaceful, unshaken mind is called mindfulness.” Another commentary says: “Ultimate truth is not moved by any dualistic views, and this is universally called mindfulness.” In the West, such as Vaidehi, Sudhana, and Nagarjuna, they achieved birth in the Pure Land by attaining the stages. In China, figures like Huiyuan, Zhiyi, and Yongming achieved birth by realization. The sutras and treatises record many such cases, too numerous to list. Some texts say: “Seek awakening there.” This is for those of middling or lower abilities. As for the saying: “Awaken your own Buddha; no need to seek birth in the Pure Land,” this is spoken for bodhisattvas above the tenth stage. If one claims to awaken to ultimate truth but has not cut off afflictions and yet does not seek birth in the Pure Land, then great masters like Nagarjuna and Yongming would be like people who see flowers in the sky—pointless busybodies.
