> Four Pure Abodes

> One-practice Samadhi requires unwavering resolve. If the mind loses mindfulness, it lapses into distraction, And Samadhi remains unattained. 1. \*\*Mind-Gathering Mindfulness\*\* — Bring the mind back in every moment, never forgetting the thought of the buddha. Even in sleep, hold this mindfulness as you lie down. Do not let the thread of thought break or change. 2. \*\*Courageous Mindfulness\*\* — Like a person so obsessed with desire that they would brave a blazing road or tiger’s den to reach their object of craving. 3. \*\*Deep-Minded Mindfulness\*\* — Like one determined to explore the vast and bottomless ocean, never stopping until the path of awakening is fully traversed. 4. \*\*Contemplative Mindfulness\*\* — In each mindful thought, see the buddha’s thirty-two marks and eighty auspicious signs. 5. \*\*Free-from-Heart Mindfulness\*\* — Let go of all worldly striving—thoughts of fame, ambition, sensual craving, attachment, pride, self-protection, judgments of others. Simply, purely, recite the buddha’s name. 6. \*\*Tearful Mindfulness\*\* — Every time the thought arises—hair stands on end, the heart breaks as if remembering a deceased mother or a gifted child lost too soon. 7. \*\*Passionate Mindfulness\*\* — Like a brilliant yet forgotten scholar—lonely, frustrated, and so consumed by their plight they can barely keep living. 8. \*\*All-Pervasive Mindfulness\*\* — Whether seeing, hearing, sensing, or knowing—every pore, every bone, every corner of being recites the buddha’s name. 9. \*\*Investigative Mindfulness\*\* — Recite once, yet question deeply: “What separates the buddha from this very thought?” 10. \*\*Reality-As-It-Is Mindfulness\*\* — Understand that this very thought is, from the beginning, neither “having mind” nor “no mind,” nor both, nor neither. This is the supreme gateway of mindfulness of the buddha. Those who practice this will see the buddha in this very life.
