> Seven Pure Precepts

> All pure practices are founded on discipline, just as a building requires level ground. Painting begins with a prepared surface, and training in discipline is the same. It is the foremost of all wholesome qualities, the first gateway to enter the Pure Land. Without keeping discipline, it is impossible to be reborn in the Pure Land—just as a filthy woman cannot hope to serve the Lord of Heaven. The ten kinds of discipline are: First, the discipline against greed and stinginess—generously practicing the giving of wealth, life, and the Dharma, without holding anything back. Second, the discipline against breaking precepts—fully upholding the five precepts, ethical precepts, and even the precepts that transcend defilement. Third, the discipline against anger—training the mind and body with patience. When faced with harsh words or violence, simply reflect on the law of cause and effect. Think of it as repaying a debt, as a lesson from a teacher, or as enduring wind, cold, or heat. Fourth, the discipline against laziness—recognizing that in the dangerous path of rebirth there is no room for carelessness. Like carrying a bowl filled to the brim with oil while walking on a tightrope, one must not look left or right, nor allow a second thought to arise. Fifth, the discipline against distraction—restraining the senses and settling all mental images, like guarding a lamp in the wind or protecting a bird from escape. Sixth, the discipline against ignorance—shattering confusion with wisdom. Just as all work depends on daylight, so all practice becomes pointless in darkness. Like sightseeing requires open eyes, a blind person or one asleep cannot perceive mountains and rivers. Seventh, the discipline against pride—not being arrogant about talent, intellect, realization, or debating skill. Regard all personal achievements as dust on a mirror, and do not let this dust look down on another's dust. Eighth, the discipline against concealment—knowing that at every point in my mind, all the Buddhas, all the Bodhisattvas, and all spiritual beings are present. Nothing can be hidden, just as no one can escape their own shadow under the midday sun. Ninth, the discipline against uselessness—staying away from all frivolous activities, poetry and literature, worldly attachments, and empty talk of liberation that has no effect. Tenth, the discipline against attachment—practicing discipline solely for rebirth in the Pure Land and the benefit of all beings, not seeking fame, praise, or the rewards of human, heavenly, or lesser vehicle attainments. When a Bodhisattva upholds pure discipline in this way, they can gather sentient beings and lead them to rebirth in the Pure Land. For even the most dull and stubborn beings cannot help but respect and admire the power of such virtue.
