### 八淨處者

> Eight Bases of Mastery

有志出塵。當捨惡處。若不捨者。是厭離未極。厭未極。是忻淨土未極。龍樹曰。菩薩心不貴轉輪聖王人天福樂。但念諸佛。是故隨心所重而生佛土。今小適意處尚不能捨。何況輪王。是縛足欲行。繫翅求飛也。一繁華喧闐處當遠。二歌樓酒肆處當遠。三熱𦦨熏約處當遠。四論除目及朝事處當遠。五恩愛纏縛及熟歷處當遠。六詩壇文社鬬章摘句處當遠。七譏刺古今較長競短處當遠。八講無義味道學處當遠。九義解鬬名相矜小智處當遠。十宗乘狂解妄談頓悟輕視戒律處當遠。是等撓道。與魔不異。若離是處。道業當辦。

> To aspire towards transcendence, you must abandon places of unwholesomeness. If you cannot abandon them, your renunciation is not yet complete; and if renunciation is not complete, your longing for the Pure Land is not yet sincere. Nāgārjuna said: "A bodhisattva's mind does not value the heavenly bliss or worldly pleasures of a wheel-turning king; it only recollects the Buddhas. Thus, one is reborn in a Buddha-land according to what one's mind treasures." If you cannot even give up trivial conveniences now, how could you renounce the status of a wheel-turning king? That is like someone with bound feet trying to walk, or a bird with tied wings wishing to fly. You must distance yourself from these ten things: 1. Places bustling with noise and distraction. 2. Brothels, bars, and places of indulgence. 3. Overheated, oppressive environments. 4. Spots where politics and official appointments are discussed. 5. Entanglements of emotional attachment and familiar routines. 6. Poetry societies and literary groups obsessed with crafting ornate phrases. 7. Venues for criticizing the past and present, or debating superiority and inferiority. 8. Academic circles advocating shallow, flavorless intellectualism. 9. Engagements in doctrinal disputes over names and concepts, boasting petty cleverness. 10. Wild interpretations of the essential teachings, false claims of sudden enlightenment, and contempt for moral discipline. These ten obstruct the path of practice; they are no different from demons. If you withdraw from such places, your spiritual endeavors will bear fruit.
