> Nine Pure Companions

> True insight is not activated unless through the right friend. Unwholesome dharmas do not cease unless with the wrong friend. Just as a cart with one wheel removed will topple, even worldly letters and discursive doctrines still require mutual accord to be validated—how much more so the supreme path! The Sutra of Conditions says: "When the wind blows from the forests of sandalwood and tagara, it brings a wondrous fragrance. If it passes over manure and corpses, the wind becomes foul." Just as a clean garment should be placed in a fragrant case, but if placed near a foul garment, it too becomes foul. So it is with friends: one must strictly distinguish the pure from the impure. 1. Befriend the friend who delights in mountain forests and solitude—they can still your restless mind. 2. Befriend the friend who upholds the precepts strictly—they can reduce your desires. 3. Befriend the friend of vast wisdom—they can lead you out of the maze of confusion. 4. Befriend the friend who masters the scriptures—they can resolve your doubts and difficulties. 5. Befriend the friend of quiet simplicity—they can temper your ambition. 6. Befriend the friend who is humble and endures insult—they can dissolve your arrogance. 7. Befriend the friend who is straightforward and gives honest advice—they can check your faults. 8. Befriend the friend who is courageous and diligent—they can hasten your attainment of the path. 9. Befriend the friend who is generous with wealth and fond of giving—they can break your great stinginess. 10. Befriend the friend who is compassionate, protects all beings, and does not begrudge life itself—they can crush attachments to self and others. Avoid the opposite types. When all else fails, retreat to solitude, work on your own practice, take the Buddha image as your teacher, and the sutras and commentaries as companions. As for others who are merely fond of play and amusement, it is better to cut ties with them than to consort with them. If a garden has no fine flowers, do not plant there—rank weeds only spoil the pleasure and add disgust.
