> Lifespan Measure

> The sutra says, "The lifespan of that Buddha is immeasurable, boundless, and beyond calculation in eons." It also says, "When that Buddha enters Parinirvāṇa, Guanyin Bodhisattva will become a Buddha." Since He will eventually enter cessation, His lifespan appears limited. Explanation: Amitābha's lifespan is originally "the immeasurable within the measurable." Therefore, it is described as "immeasurable and boundless," with "countless eons" used to suggest the number. An ancient master said: "The position of a successor in the Śrāvaka and Pratyekabuddha paths reveals the Buddha's lifespan as limited; the position of a successor in the Bodhisattva and Perfect paths reveals the Buddha's lifespan as unlimited." Because all Tathāgatas of the ten directions and three times share the same Dharmakāya and one wisdom, when the bodhisattva's mind of seeking ceases, the Tathāgata's responsive activity subsides—this is called "succeeding to the Buddha's position." It is fundamentally different from the limited succession in the Śrāvaka and Pratyekabuddha paths, where one Buddha definitely ceases and the next definitely appears. Thus, the \*Golden Light Sutra\* commentary on the Four Buddhas descending into the hall says: "If one sees the four Buddhas as sharing the same Honor-body, with one body and one wisdom, that is the Eternal Body, and the disciples are of the Single Vehicle. If one sees the four Buddhas as having different physical forms, that is the Manifestation Body, and the disciples belong to the Three Vehicles, numerous in kind." Therefore, it is understood that the entire Dharmadhātu body is neither born nor extinguished. How can it be divided vertically into past and future, or horizontally into 'this' and 'that'? Since it is beyond birth and extinction, the meaning of 'immeasurable' is fully realized. Furthermore, in the Pure Land, the lands, atoms, waters, and trees are all the Buddha's body. The sutra says: "All those various birds are transformations created by Amitābha." If the Buddha's lifespan were finite, then His bodhimaṇḍa, land, waters, birds, and sounds would also have to be finite. If finite, there could be no succession. If infinite, one should not speak of 'cessation' in the broad sense. This is like the realm of space—neither having limits nor being without limits. It can be known only through the illumination of inconceivable wisdom.
