> Does the Fifth Day Moon Exist or Not?

> Some versions say the sun and moon are in the sky. Others say they are in the sky but do not move. Some neither affirm nor deny their existence, while others directly state they do not exist. Moreover, the sutra says: "The Buddha's light shines universally throughout his land, countless and inexpressible, outshining the sun and moon. All the Hearers have bodily light shining one fathom. Bodhisattvas' lights shine up to a hundred thousand fathoms. The lights of the two great Bodhisattvas constantly illuminate a universe of a thousand million worlds. Thus, even if there were sun and moon, they would be like fireflies in the presence of the sun—how could they give light?" If the sun and moon cannot illuminate, then there should be no day or night. Why does the sutra speak of the six periods of day and night, and of dawn, mealtime, and so forth? Answer: This is also an expedient explanation. Using this concept of day and night as a metaphor for that time. Moreover, the coming and going of day and night is a phenomenon arising from sentient beings' minds alternating between clarity and darkness. A land of Pure Buddha should not have this. Even the Heaven of the Thirty-Three does not rely on the sun and moon, let alone Ultimate Bliss. Even if there were such things, it would be because the beings of that transformed land have not yet shed their views of form and emptiness, thus seeing such sun and moon phenomena. You should know that the state and measure of the ordinary and saintly in the Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, dwelling together, are utterly different from those in other Buddha lands—because it is a vertically transcended Pure Land.
