Ratnaśrī-paripṛcchā Sutra (寶女所問經)

Chapter 3: Wisdom

Then the wise Shariputra said to the World-Honored One: "How extraordinary, Lord of Heaven! This precious woman's eloquence in questioning, her ability to explain and clarify with such sharp wisdom — could she have always possessed this ability to fully express such essential truths?"

The World-Honored One asked: "Shariputra, what do you think? Do not think that this precious daughter explained the essential Dharma through sharp intelligence. Do not create such a view. This precious daughter has already attained unobstructed eloquence."

At that time, the elder Shariputra asked the precious maiden, "Are you able, with joy, to discern wisdom and explain the causes and conditions?"

Shariputra, Precious Maiden replied: "Indeed, Shariputra, all phenomena can be spoken of and all return to the actions created by understanding. Indeed, Shariputra, the bodhisattva's mind can distinguish and explain things, which is understanding and wisdom. Why? Because they awaken the mind to pursue the path by grasping the essence of all meanings—this is the wisdom of understanding meanings. Calming the realm of reality awakens the mind to pursue the path—this is called the wisdom of eloquence. What they say all leads to elimination—this is the wisdom of eloquence that eliminates all. Following all intentions is understanding and wisdom. Having awakened this mind, they attain unimpeded praise and unbroken eloquence—this is the wisdom of eloquent understanding."

Lady Jewel continued, "Shariputra, the meaning of non-doing, the meaning of non-attachment, the mind's great purpose, the meaning of clear understanding—these arise from always wisely contemplating that all phenomena are like illusions. The mind itself is the essence of Dharma; a penetrating mind opens all gates. One who returns seeks wisdom, does not cling to the six senses, remains unattached in the mind, and attains unobstructed eloquence and discriminating wisdom. All meanings are actually non-meaning. When you see the tranquility of phenomena, what you call 'following along' is merely a verbal expression. Eloquence relies on words. What is meant by 'Buddha' is the meaning of universal awakening. From this, Dharma arises; by thus responding accordingly, one discriminates phenomena. One who possesses eloquence discriminates freely: meaning is meaning, non-attached states are Dharma, things that accord are accord, and the eloquence of Dharma is true eloquence. The meaning of non-existence is the meaning of unconditioned Nirvana. Union is the meaning of wisdom. In Dharma that unites, all flavors are one—the meaning of a single taste. The noble community accords with cessation; that is true cessation. Discrimination itself is eloquence. Therefore, Shariputra, in thus expounding the scriptures of all phenomena, constantly contemplating such Dharma is indeed the meaning of wisdom."
