Chapter 5: The Eight Powers
於是舍利弗問寶女曰：「菩薩大士承何威力無所穢厭？」
Then Shariputra asked the Noble Lady, "By what power do great bodhisattvas remain free from weariness and aversion?"
寶女答曰：「唯，舍利弗！菩薩八力無所患厭。何謂為八？一曰、慈力無所加害。二曰、哀力不捨群黎。三曰、和性之力不為下劣。四曰、慧力離於塵勞。五曰、權力心無所厭。六曰、德力行無所著。七曰、聖力則無愚戇。八曰、進力本志上願。是為八力。菩薩周旋之所建立，道德之力無所患厭。」
The daughter replied: "Indeed, Shariputra! The bodhisattva's eight strengths bring no weariness or aversion. What are the eight? First, the strength of loving-kindness, which brings no harm to others. Second, the strength of compassion, which never abandons all beings. Third, the strength of gentle character, which does not stoop to baseness. Fourth, the strength of wisdom, which is free from worldly defilements. Fifth, the strength of skillful means, with a mind that never tires. Sixth, the strength of virtue, whose actions are unattached. Seventh, the strength of holiness, which is free from folly. Eighth, the strength of diligence, with original vows aimed at the highest aspiration. These are the eight strengths. Through these the bodhisattva moves through the world, establishing a power of virtue that knows no weariness or aversion."
耆年舍利弗問寶女曰：「汝豈具足如斯力乎，若能平等往來周旋耶？」
The elder Shariputra asked the precious maiden, "Do you truly possess such strength? Can you move and act with perfect equanimity, coming and going freely and without obstruction?"
寶女答曰：「若以平等平等住者，設能如斯行諸平等，彼則無力亦不羸劣。其平等者，彼則不有亦復不無，無無所造不造所行，斯謂平等。平等猶空，一切諸法亦如虛空，其如空者則無虛空，空虛曰寂，便無言說若如曠野，一切諸法亦復如是！猶如虛空慌惚無形亦無言辭，如是平等則無羸劣亦無力勢。
The daughter Precious replied: "If one dwells in equality with equality, and can thus practice all equalities, that one has no strength and is not weak either. What is equal is neither existent nor non-existent, with no creating and no acting—this is called equality. Equality is like space; all dharmas are also like space. What is like space has no space itself; space is called stillness, with no words to speak. Like a vast wilderness, all dharmas are also so! Just as space is empty and formless with no speech, so equality has neither weakness nor strength."
「唯，舍利弗！菩薩羸劣則有勢力。所以者何？假使若以塵勞、愛欲而羸劣者，則以智慧而有力勢。若慳貪劣，則用布施致於堅強。設以犯戒而羸劣者，則以戒禁而堅強矣！設以瞋恚而羸劣者，則以忍辱為力勢矣！其以懈怠為羸劣者，則以精進為力勢矣！其以亂意為羸劣者，則以禪定為力勢矣！設以邪智為羸劣者，則以正智為力勢矣！斯一切法設使菩薩於不善德而羸劣者，則以德本為力勢矣！」
於時，世尊讚寶女曰：「善哉善哉！若有欲言，當作斯說。」說是語時，五百菩薩逮得法忍。
