The Systematic Commentary on the Great Calming and Contemplation by the Song Dynasty Eminent Monk Congyi, which organizes and structures the fundamental Tiantai text *The Great Calming and Contemplation* composed by the Sui Dynasty Master Zhiyi. This work elucidates the profound principles of *The Great Calming and Contemplation* through a rigorous structural framework, establishes the sequential stages of calming and contemplation practice, and illuminates the perfect and immediate teaching of the Threefold Contemplation in a Single Mind. As a key interpretive text within the Tiantai doctrinal and contemplative system, it not only inherits the lineage of Master Zhiyi's teachings on calming and contemplation but also contributed to the revival of Tiantai doctrinal studies in the Song Dynasty. Regarded throughout history as an authoritative guide for studying Tiantai calming and contemplation, it has profoundly influenced the theory and practice of meditation in Chinese Buddhism.

Chapter 1: Classification of the Transmitted Teachings

This overall points to the entire sutra as the fundamental practice of the complete and immediate Buddha-vehicle.

Although the early part of the General Meaning mentions the conclusion of the three kinds of Cessation and Contemplation in a few places, those are merely borrowing names to tie up meanings in a broad sense. They do not refer to the actual three modes of practice. Because the General Meaning text is concise while its meaning is vast, it uses the principle of "three and one" to summarize and conclude everything.

You should understand that the essence within this teaching is solely concerned with sudden enlightenment.

Translation:

In the preface, it is stated that the primary meaning lies in a single, all-encompassing awakening.

Although only a slight difference may set them apart, they must not be confused or mistaken for one another.

Further indication, in clear terms, for those who see the text as perfect and sudden, is like the teaching recorded at Yuquan Temple.

Although the text below mentions the Four Teachings and the Eight Teachings, the contemplable and the inconceivable, the relative and the absolute, all of these are simply means to reveal and clarify the one perfect and sudden reality.
