> Based on the Four Noble Truths of Suffering, its Origin, its Cessation, and the Path, we develop the Four Great Vows. Sentient beings are constantly drowning in a sea of suffering. External paths ultimately lead to the causes of suffering. This is all because they do not know the way of seeking above and transforming below. Not knowing to seek above, one becomes arrogant and overbearing, deludedly self-important. Not knowing to transform below, one only knows oneself and fails to see others. Thus, one widely creates deep transgressions, falls into various depths, and cycles through the seven destinies like ants in a loop. Although the Two Vehicles can practice emptiness and escape the Three Realms, because they do not develop the Bodhi Mind, they are bound by emptiness. Therefore, the myriad practices of the Bodhisattvas and the two adornments of the Buddhas are not possessed by them. Thus, if we wish to be born in the Inner Court and encounter the Dragon-Flower Assembly, we should develop the unsurpassed mind of the Way, expand our hearts, and within the sea of birth and death, create a great precious raft to ferry ourselves and others across, saving all together. The sutra says: "If there is a bhikṣu who loves and reveres the unsurpassed Bodhi Mind, he should contemplate thus." From this, we know the Bodhi Mind is the essential path to the Dragon-Flower Assembly. All Buddhas of the ten directions and all great Bodhisattvas were once ordinary beings. Because they developed this mind, they swiftly attained the Way. Those who can develop this mind have compassion that connects to the ocean of enlightenment and loving-kindness equal to all sentient beings. Mañjuśrī and Samantabhadra's minds and essences merge. Without leaving their original seats, they manifest forms throughout the myriad phenomena. The Four Great Vows are: First, based on the Truth of Suffering, we vow: "Sentient beings are innumerable; I vow to save them all." This means to save those who have not yet been saved. Second, based on the Truth of the Origin of Suffering, we vow: "Afflictions are inexhaustible; I vow to sever them all." This means to liberate those who have not yet been liberated. These two great kingly vows are called "transforming below." Third, based on the Truth of the Path, we vow: "Dharma gates are limitless; I vow to learn them all." This means to establish in peace those who are not yet at peace. Fourth, based on the Truth of Cessation, we vow: "The Buddha Way is unsurpassed; I vow to attain it." This means to lead to Nirvana those who have not yet attained it. These two great kingly vows are called "seeking above." Because of seeking above, we break our arrogant minds, thus avoiding the fault of being satisfied with little, like the youth Sudhana. Because of transforming below, we dispel our self-conceit, thus avoiding the narrowness of self-cultivation alone, like the Bodhisattva Never Disparaging. Looking upward, there is no Dharma we do not hear. Looking downward, there is no good we do not accomplish. With this, entering the three wretched destinies is none other than a pure land. Extending this to transform the ten classes of beings, all are called kin. The burning house is originally cool and refreshing. The bonds and defilements are already liberated now. Relying on this Sahā world as our stage, we perform the Dharma's melody in its theater. If one merely hates suffering and seeks escape, I know there will certainly be no place to wield such effort. Therefore, these four vows are the brave generals with which all Buddhas subdue the armies of Māra, the vanguard that breaks the enemy of birth and death, the bright lamp that illuminates the dark road of the five aggregates, and the wish-fulfilling jewel that contains all virtuous merits. Thus, practitioners should, before entering the repentance, during the seven days of preparatory practice, six times day and night, before an image of Śākyamuni, burn incense on their arms or fingers, light various precious incenses, kneel with right knee on the ground, join their palms, prostrate with five limbs touching the earth, harbor inner joy, develop sincere and profound respect, gaze upon the golden visage, and concentrate the mind without distraction. <note>The leader holds the incense burner, and the assembly recites together in unison:</note>

> I take refuge in the World-Honored Shakyamuni Buddha, the Unsurpassed, Perfectly Enlightened One. To Manjushri, Samantabhadra, and all Dharma Princes, whose Dharma bodies abide eternally, whose Buddha eyes see all, who have compassion for all sentient beings—I ask you to bear witness for me now. Relying on the profound ocean of the Great Vehicle, I vow for the sake of all beings to arouse the mind of enlightenment, to seek rebirth in the inner court, to behold the Dragon Flower Assembly, to hear the turning of the true Dharma wheel, and to personally receive the prediction of enlightenment. May you grant your blessings so that I may accomplish this.

> I vow to deliver all sentient beings without limit. I vow to cut off all afflictions without end. I vow to study all Dharma gates without measure. I vow to accomplish the supreme Buddha way.
