> We pay homage to the Supreme Master of Radiance, the Enlightened One, and thus we can believe, accept, and understand this teaching. Since the Great Sage embodies the essence of good karma, we pray: send down compassion and bring universal joy. By the Father's gracious remembrance, the Envoy of Light descended, able to heal the sickness of our nature and free us from confusion and error. He removes the knots and bonds of every affliction, bringing happiness to every mind and heart. Nothing hidden but is revealed and illuminated; every secret is fully disclosed. These are the Two Principles and the Two Great Powers— who but one of good seed could understand such blessings? One is lofty and vast beyond all measure, entirely light, with no place of darkness. The Envoys of Light of all Buddhas dwell within it— this is where the Lord of Radiance has established his realm. Light pervades all, utterly pure, eternally joyful, at peace, unchanging and still. Those who receive this joy are free from affliction; to speak of suffering there has no ground. The assembly of saints and Dharma halls are all adorned and pure, even the temples of the Buddhas. They dwell forever in joy and light; to speak of illness there has no ground. If one could go to that land, they would ultimately gather in universal assembly, free from all sorrow. The saints move freely, each at ease; beatings and imprisonment can never occur. The dwelling places are adorned and wholly pure; all that is evil and impure has never existed there. Joy fills everything, ever broad and peaceful; to speak of fear or trembling there has no ground. In the supreme world of light, lands as countless as dust motes— naturally adorned with wondrous treasures, the saints dwell there forever. Those worlds and lands rest on diamond-jewel ground radiating downward light. From beginningless time until now, all is complete; to speak of quaking there has no ground. All the saints in that place are unstained by ignorance or desire. Far removed from delusion, craving, and male or female form, how could the cycles of rebirth ever press upon them? The saints are united in one mind, all in harmony; division and strife can never reach them. Their thoughts roam free without obstruction; they have no wish to seek the things of desire. The temple grounds are all adorned and pure; there is no mutual harm or opposition there. The impermanence that destroys birth and death— none of this exists in the realm of light. There, no enemies invade the borders, no soldiers or warhorses guard the frontiers. Even if the King of Demons rouses a mind of greed and craving, in the realm of light he has no share at all. The diamond-jewel ground is exceedingly subtle and wondrous, adorned with countless beautiful colors and radiant light. The saints dwell there at ease without obstruction, forever free from decay and dissolution, without care or grief. The saints' adorned appearance is most extraordinary; their bodies shine with light, their radiance congealed. Compared to the brightness of a hundred thousand suns and moons, the light from a single hair-tip of those saints is still greater. Inner and outer light, with no shadow of darkness; their wondrous bodies forever radiate a thousand kinds of light. They journey through the victorious diamond ground; there is not the slightest weight upon them. The fine garments they wear are all delightful, not made by hand yet naturally perfected. The saints' clothing is ever fresh and clean; though long enduring, it never decays, no moth or vermin comes. All the fine flowers of this world are gathered as a metaphor for their subtle and beautiful appearance— yet their adornments are even more abundant, extraordinarily adorned, with countless colors. Those temples, towers, and halls are made of wondrous treasures without a single flaw. Food and drink are all sweet and nourishing; the land is abundant with no famine. The jeweled ornaments are utterly indestructible, once worn, they are never removed. All the saints gather in universal joy, forever free from suffering and separation. Their flower crowns of green and jade are wondrously adorned, shining together, ever fresh, never wilting. Tongue and flesh cannot begin to praise them; their wondrous colors are endless and never fade. The saints' bodies are light and forever pure, their hands, feet, and limbs without obstruction. They do not create conditioned karma of birth and death; how could one speak of them as weary? Those saints are ethereal and their bodies forever joyful; their diamond bodies never sleep. Since they have no dreams or confused perceptions, how could one speak of them as afraid? The saints are ever luminous and possess wondrous wisdom; forgetfulness and dullness have never existed in them. All the affairs and appearances of boundless worlds they see as clearly as in a bright mirror. The minds of all the saints are wholly true; deceit and pretense have never existed in them. Their actions of body, speech, and mind are forever pure; how could one speak of them as speaking falsehood? The world is filled with all precious treasures; there is nothing that is not worthy of praise. The temples are vast and spacious, lacking nothing; how could one speak of poverty or want? The pangs of hunger and the torments of heat—all hardships— in the realm of light there is eternal joy; none of this exists. Forever free from hunger and thirst, from harm and affliction; there is no bitter or salty water there either. Hundreds of rivers, seas, and springs— the water of life is clear and pure, all fragrant and wondrous. If one enters, one does not drift or drown; no violent waters come to cause harm. The saints dwell at ease in constant joy; their land is praiseworthy and none speak ill of it. The suffering of meeting with the hateful has never existed there; none praise to one's face while slandering behind. They are compassionate, joyful, and sympathetic to one another; jealousy and all evils have never existed there. Their steps are swift, faster than the wind; sluggish and paralyzed limbs have no place there. Their spirit-feet travel swift as lightning, manifesting in the ten directions without obstruction. Their extraordinary wondrous forms are truly hard to describe; no disaster or illness can harm them. All pressing calamities and difficulties, all fears and all demonic affairs— warfare, mutual harm, and killing— none of this exists in the realm of light. The world is ever peaceful, without terror; the land is adorned and pure, no one can harm it. The diamond-jewel ground has no boundary; to speak of its destruction has no ground. The jeweled trees there all stand in ordered rows; jeweled fruits ever grow and never wither. All alike in size, not eaten by insects; green and flourishing, they arise naturally. Bitterness, poison, sourness, astringency, and black rot— the jeweled fruits are not like this; they are fragrant and sweet. They are not hollow within while solid without; inside and out they shine with the taste of sweet dew. The roots, stems, and leaves of the jeweled trees, above and below, the whole body is sweet dew. Their fragrance fills the world; jeweled flowers shine together, ever red and white. The gardens and parks of that land are vast, adorned, and pure; extraordinary fragrances fill the entire garden. Rubble, thorns, and foul weeds— to say they exist there has no ground. That diamond ground ever radiates light; inner and outer are mirrored clearly, nothing unseen. Jeweled ground upon jeweled ground, countless lands— seeing through them all, each one appears distinctly. Fragrant mists fill the world; a single, undivided ocean of life and being. It pervades and fills all without obstruction; the saints roam within it, and this fragrance is the most wondrous. Space itself is naturally unchanging; subtle luminous clouds without shadow or hindrance. Clear and pure, without dust or obscurity, equally spread across all worlds. The jeweled mountains of that realm are of a billion kinds; a million streams of fragrant smoke pour forth. Inner and outer light, their bodies pure— sweet dew fills them without boundary. Springs of clear water flow without interruption; true sweet dew taste, without muddiness or bitterness. The saints are fully satisfied, lacking nothing; to speak of thirst or want there has no ground. Wondrous breezes blow gently, all delightful; harmonious and smooth, they circle throughout the ten directions. Lightly brushing the jeweled towers and jeweled pavilions, jeweled bells and chimes ever resound. The wondrous fire of light has no comparison; its wondrous colors are cool and ever radiant. Bright and ever present, without birth or death; its extraordinary radiance is truly beyond compare. The nature of this fire is ethereal, without poison or heat; those who touch or enter it are not burned. There is no ash or soot there; to speak of burning or scorching has no ground. The halls and palaces of that place are not made by hand, yet are firm. Without labor or craft, they are naturally so; to speak of building or construction has no ground. Whatever emerges from the jeweled ground all have sight, hearing, and awareness. They behold the Supreme King of Nirvana, praising and singing the Great Sage's majesty. Dark shadows have never existed in that place; all inner and outer is incomparably bright. All bodily forms are most extraordinary; those on the jeweled ground are ever green and jade-like. The saints' bodies are most extraordinary; their lofty and adorned appearance is truly hard to conceive. They extend down to the jeweled ground without boundary; to seek their limit has no ground. Those saints' wondrous forms are worthy of reverence; they have never had illness or calamity. They are powerful, ever at peace, without aging; to speak of their decay has no ground—their bodies are forever strong. Were it not for the Great Sage who knows the measure of bodies, what ordinary person could calculate or describe them? The diamond body is inconceivable; its size and form only the saints can distinguish. The saints' colors and forms are most subtle and wondrous, radiating great light without boundary. From beginningless time, manifesting now and to the end, to speak of their bodies perishing has no ground. The forms of humans, gods, saints, and ordinary beings— no tongue of flesh could ever praise them all. The nature and appearance of all Buddhas are truly inconceivable; so too is the diamond-jewel ground. The saints are ever joyful, never weary; honored and glorious, ultimately delighted. Their bodily forms are subtle and ever upright; inner and outer adornment is truly beyond words. The saints' light is most extraordinary; without interruption, they shine upon one another. Those saints are united in one mind, all in harmony; to speak of division has no ground at all. The adorned and wondrous forms of all the saints all dwell in the jeweled halls and pavilions of the temple. Whatever thoughts or intentions arise in their minds, they all perceive one another clearly without doubt or error. All the saints in the realm of light have bodies light and agile, without weariness or heaviness. Their wondrous forms travel to all lands according to their thought; their perceptions appear everywhere alike. The saints are united in one mind, ever joyful; they perform subtle and wondrous sounds without ceasing. They praise and bow and sing without weariness; they all extol the Lord of Radiance's good karma and majesty. Their chanting and wondrous music are all delightful; their voices are clear and beautiful, all calm and serene. Above and below, together they resound with wondrous sound; it fills the temple without rest. Their sounds pour forth most extraordinarily; they sing in harmony, expressing wondrous virtue. The joy of all the saints is ultimate; they dwell forever in peace, never weary. The luminous jeweled ground has no boundary; to seek its shores has no ground. There is no pressure or confinement; each roams freely wherever they wish. The saints are united in one mind, all in harmony; there is no division or strife over fame and gain. Equally they gather in universal assembly, all complete; they dwell at ease in the vast temple. The temple is pure and wondrously adorned; there is no terror or obstruction. The streets and lanes are broadly adorned; they roam freely wherever they wish. All demons and hungry ghosts, with ugly faces and forms— from beginningless time to now and after, to say they exist there has no ground. Chickens, dogs, pigs, and other kinds— none of these exist in the realm of Nirvana. The sounds of the five kinds of birds and beasts— to say they exist there has no ground. All dark shadows and dust— none of this exists in the Land of Ultimate Bliss. The saints' temples are all pure; if there were darkness, there would be no ground for it. Light pervades and fills everything; life is ultimate and eternally peaceful. Honor and joy have never been interrupted; compassion is true and ever generous. Ever joyful and happy without pause; their bodies and minds are delighted in the jeweled fragrance. They do not count years, months, or days; how could they worry about life ending or the three deaths? All the saints have no birth or death; the killer demon of impermanence cannot harm them. They do not practice desire or have impure conception; how could one speak of them as having delusion and craving? The decaying bodies of male and female, male and female forms— the impermanent fruits of birth and death and desire— none of this exists in the Land of Ultimate Bliss; the dwelling place is pure, without calamity. The venerable saints in the realm of light are far removed from pregnancy, without gathering or scattering. The whole land is peaceful, without terror; there has never been fear or panic. All from the living word, the wondrous speech, the saints' transformations appear by this cause. Each transformation is originally adorned; each is alike, with no difference seen. The lands are all similar in size; the temples and dwellings are likewise without difference. Each radiates light without limit; their lives are ultimate, without record of years. All border regions are ever peaceful; their natures and forms are equal, the ground without difference. Three eternities mutually reinforce, great and steadfast, shining together; to speak of darkness there has no ground. This is called the Land of Eternal Joy— the original cause of birth of the Envoys of Light of all Buddhas. There are no three calamities or eight difficulties; birth, aging, sickness, and death do not move them. This is the One Great Power of Suchness; the Envoy of Light Mángnǐ fully proclaims and reveals it. He can expound the true path of the cause of birth; the saints in universal assembly attain exactly this.

> We praise and honor you, the True Lord, most precious and vast, the highest King of Light, forever shining throughout the world, together with your holy assembly. Mani, King of Dharma, Lord of Radiance, grant us wisdom; all you holy ones, grant us your grace. From beyond the three realms, you come into the midst of birth and death to revive our true nature. You are the great physician king, the one who settles all disputes, who opens the spring of sweet nectar and plants the tree of life. You rescue the people of your own land and gather in the children of light. Over the gentle flocks, you serve as shepherd. You are the field of merit, the embankment and moat, making seedlings flourish and fruit ripen. For the pure Dharma, you are the guardian. We bow in reverence to your majestic virtue, and in humility we acknowledge your deep kindness. Before the Supreme Honored One, before the assembly of light, we deeply receive your great grace, and gratefully acknowledge your great bounty. Truly, for us, you remove great calamities and bring great joy. We now, before all the holy ones, sincerely and earnestly repent. Everything received from Mani Buddha— the seal of the highest method— we hold fast day and night, never daring to treat it lightly. We now, in one pure name, resolve to practice, and ultimately attain victory, just as your original vow promised.

> Homage and praise, we constantly and widely extol. We praise this present day, the most excellent of all times. All beings who delight in goodness now enter the fragrant waters, Bathing away every stain of dust, so all may abide in accordance with the Dharma. We praise the great and majestic one, pervading the pure Dharma. He is the Buddha Yishu, able to revive all seeds of goodness. We praise the True Lord, the mighty and venerable Mani, Who can enliven the body of pure Dharma and save all beings of radiance. May you gaze upon this pure assembly with eyes of compassion, Small as this little group is, humble as this little place is. We only pray that you protect and guard us, always granting strength and encouragement. Though the body is hindered, the true essence is not hindered; may we be blessed within and without, always. We pure Dharma men, and you steadfast young women, Together with all who listen — may we all attain our wishes in the end.

> Whenever this verse is recited on the final day, it is a vow-text of repentance for all who hear it.

> Listen, all of you—each kneel with sincerity and earnestness, Seek compassion and repent before the True Father, The Great Compassionate Lord, The Twelve Light Kings, the land of Nirvana, Before the wondrous-born Emptiness, The boundless holy assembly, the unmoving, unchanging Diamond Jewel Ground, Before the palaces of sun and moon, the two halls of light, Each of the three compassionate fathers, worthy of all praise, Before Vairocana, the great adorned pillar, The body of five wondrous marks, Guanyin and Shizhi, On this auspicious day, at this praiseworthy time, The seven-jeweled fragrant pool, filled with the water of life— If any lack the seven offerings.

> The ten precepts and the three seals of the Dharma. Again, having harmed the five-part Dharma body and endlessly added to its costs. Or having cut down the five kinds of plants and trees. Or having enslaved the five kinds of sentient beings. There are countless other transgressions besides these. Now all are washed clean and repented. When the day of impermanence comes, and this hateful physical body is shed, all Buddhas and sages will surround you front and back. A jeweled ship will be prepared, and your own good deeds will welcome you. Straight to the presence of King Equality, you will receive the three great victories. Namely, flower crowns, necklaces, and ten thousand kinds of wonderful garments adorned and worn. Your good deeds, merit, and Buddha-nature will be praised without end. Then from the place of King Equality, banners, flowers, and jeweled canopies will surround you front and back. All the sages will sing as you enter the realm of Vairocana. Within that realm the roads are level and straight. Sacred sounds and Brahma voices resound all around, completely covering the land. From there, straight to the palace of the sun and moon. And there, before the six great compassionate fathers and the other kin, each will receive happiness and praise without end. Then again you will be guided onward to the other shore. Thus you will enter the world of Nirvana's eternal light. Together with your own good deeds, you will forever receive happiness. May all beings be of one mind, just as in the vow above.

> This verse concludes all chanting and vows, and is used for that purpose.

> Sacred chants resound, their verses beautiful and fine, aiding all good karma shared by everyone. We call upon the heavenly beings and noble assembly above, bearing the weight of radiant light. May great compassion descend, increasing all blessings and merit. Forgive the faults of our gathered assembly, and for those who listen with sincere faith, may they all attain, in one unchanging name, ultimate peace and joy.

> This verse is used when making a vow on behalf of the deceased who has received offerings.

> A certain person named Mingxing, having departed from the physical body, their karma incomplete, fears sinking into the sea of suffering. We only pray to the Two Great Lights, the Five-Part Dharma Body, the pure teacher-monks, and the power of great compassion to rescue that soul, to free it from the cycle of rebirth, from its rigid body and all the hells, from boiling cauldrons and burning coals. We only pray to all Buddhas to have pity on that soul, to arise in great compassion, to grant it liberation, to guide it into the world of light, to its place of original birth, the realm of peace and joy. Through the power of merit, may it be sustained according to these vows above.

> I now repent of the karma of body, speech, and mind, and of actions born of greed, hatred, and delusion—even those committed by giving free rein to thieves and poisons, by letting the senses run wild. Whatever doubts I have held toward the eternal Three Jewels and the Two Great Lights, whatever harm I have done to the body of Vairocana and the five sciences, whatever arrogance I have shown toward teachers, monks, parents, and good spiritual friends, whatever mutual slander I have engaged in—regarding the Seven Givings, the Ten Precepts, and the Three Seals Dharma-gate, if I have failed to practice them fully, may these offenses be dissolved and extinguished.

> On auspicious times and auspicious days, these praises are chanted. Above, we vow for the Three Constant \[refuges\] to relinquish transgressions and the Dharma-body of the Four Realms. Below, we vow for the Five Grades to illuminate the multitudes, and extending to the worthy sages of the ten directions—fitting that the sacred words are inexhaustible while ordinary understanding has its limits. Of the three thousand entries in the Sanskrit text, more than twenty paths have been translated. Moreover, regarding the sutra praises and chants, all should be composed according to the Four Realms. However, as for what Dao-ming translated, all follows the Sanskrit original. If there are those who delight in practicing and learning, first recite the various texts, then briefly reveal them—and immediately the sequence will be known. Those who copy should apply themselves to collation and revision, arranging them properly according to the Dharma. Those who praise must approach a clear teacher; they must know what is erroneous and what is distinct. Thus the Dharma-gate is vast and boundless, bright as the sun and moon; the practitioners of the Dharma walk in order, pure and solemn as the Jiang and Han rivers. We only vow...
