> Flattery and deception<note place="inline">Flattery: the character is composed of the radical for 'speech' combined with the phonetic 'xian' (pronounced 'xian'), meaning to flatter or ingratiate. The lexical annotations from the Gongyang Commentary on the Spring and Autumn Annals state that flattery means to fawn upon. The Shuowen dictionary explains it as 'speech' plus 'xian' as the sound. 'Xian' has the pronunciation 'xian,' and in the sutras it is mistakenly written with the character 'yao' (pronounced 'yong'), which is incorrect. Deception: the character is composed of 'ghost' plus 'shen' as the sound, and is pronounced 'shen' in the displaced tone. The Jia Commentary on the Guo Yu explains that deception means to confuse or mislead. The Du Commentary on the Zuo Tradition explains it as 'to cheat.' The Shuowen dictionary says it is made of 'speech' plus 'kuang' as the sound. A variant form is written as 'zhuang'.</note>
