> Weaken and decay<note place="inline">"Ju" means damp or wet; also pronounced as "ji yu"; "huai" means destruction or ruin; according to the Shuowen, "huai" means to spoil or destroy, composed of the radical "tu" (earth) with the phonetic "huai".</note>.

對治上對字說文從華音牀學反從土從寸俗用從至非也下音馳字書治理也或去聲。

> To address<note place="inline">The character "對" is explained in the Shuowen dictionary as derived from the sound "zhuang" (床) and the radicals "earth" and "inch"; the colloquial use of "to/from" is incorrect. The lower character "治" is pronounced "chi" and, according to dictionaries, means "to manage" or "to govern," sometimes used with a departing tone.</note>.

䬸食倉單反說文吞也從食𣦼聲也𣦼音殘或從水作湌經文從冫音氷非也下食字上非從人下非從良說文從亼精入反從皂彼立反經從人良俗字也。

> Eating food<note place="inline">The character 䬸 (cān) is explained in the Shuowen as "to swallow," with the phonetic component 𣦼 (cán). It can alternatively be written with the water radical as 湌. In the scriptures, it is sometimes mistakenly written with the ice radical (冫, pronounced bīng), which is incorrect. The lower part of the character is not 人 (rén) nor 良 (liáng); according to Shuowen, it consists of 亼 (jí) and 皀 (bì). Writing it with 人 and 良 is a vulgar form.</note>.

餚膳上効交反俗字也正作肴鄭箋詩云謂𦵔醢也非穀而食之曰肴顧野王云美味果蓏也說文啖也從肉爻聲也下音膳鄭玄曰膳善也膳羞善食也膳進也說文食也從肉善聲也。

> Food and delicacies<note place="inline">The character "餚" (food) is a common variant of "肴". According to Zheng Xuan's annotation on the Book of Songs, it refers to pickled and minced meats, meaning non-grain foods. Gu Yewang defines it as fine fruits and vegetables. The Shuowen Jiezi explains it as "to eat," composed of the radical "meat" and the phonetic "爻". The character "膳" (delicacies) is pronounced as "shan". Zheng Xuan states that "膳" means "good" and refers to fine foods offered as meals, also meaning "to present food." The Shuowen Jiezi describes it as "food," consisting of the radical "meat" and the phonetic "善".</note>.
