To explain this sutra, we will briefly divide our discussion into six sections: First, a general overview; second, identifying the sutra's core teaching; third, clarifying its purpose and function; fourth, explaining the title; fifth, showing how it fits into the Buddhist teachings; and sixth, interpreting the text passage by passage.
**Opening Explanation:** The *Sutra of the Lotus Blossom of the Wonderful Dharma* embodies the fundamental intention of all Buddhas throughout time and space—a great gateway through which all beings, in every realm of existence, can enter the one true path. Its language is elegant, its meaning profound; nothing is so subtle that it is not fully expressed. Its words are skillfully arranged, its truths are fully revealed; no teaching remains unspoken. The words are like blossoms that contain fruit; the meaning is like fruit that also carries skillful means.
The depth of its meaning lies in the teaching of non-duality and non-distinction. The elegance of its words lies in opening up the skillful means to reveal the ultimate truth. "Opening the skillful means" means revealing that the three vehicles taught outside the gate were provisional, that the jeweled city along the road was an illusion, that enlightenment under the tree was not a beginning, and that nirvana in the forest was not an end. "Revealing the ultimate truth" means showing that all beings are the Buddha's children, and that both hearers and solitary realizers will become Buddhas—their lifespans beyond counting, their lands untouched by the fire at the end of an age. This is the skillfulness of the words.
"Non-duality" refers to the one great matter: opening, revealing, awakening, and entering the Buddha's knowledge and vision—the supreme, singular truth that all must know and realize. "Non-distinction" refers to the threefold equality: all paths and all bodies are one in essence, with no gap between the worldly and nirvana, forever free from duality. This is the profundity of the meaning.
Thus, both words and meaning are wondrous—free from coarseness, they follow the principle of the subtle. This is called the "Wonderful Dharma." The skillful means, like blossoms, open, and the true fruit, fully revealed, is likened to a lotus, which is unstained by the mud from which it grows.
But the Wonderful Dharma is so subtle that it transcends any notion of "one" or "three." So timeless and profound is it that ideas of "long" or "short" lose their meaning. This realm is elusive—entering it is not easy, and for beings lost in confusion, emerging from it is even harder. Therefore, the Tathagata guides with skillful means: enticing beings with the goat cart in the Deer Park, showing the peril of transient existence; and driving the white ox cart at Vulture Peak, revealing boundless, eternal life. This is using the "one" to break the "three"—once the three are removed, the one is also let go. It employs the provisional to dismantle attachment to the limited—once attachment ceases, the provisional itself is forgotten.
This truth cannot be pointed to directly; words and signs are still and silent. All is empty, with nothing to rely on; utterly serene, with nothing to grasp. Knowing not what else to call it, we provisionally name it the "Lotus Blossom of the Wonderful Dharma."
Thus, those who are given a seat to hear this sutra will receive the seat of a wheel-turning king or a lord of the heavens. Those who hear but a single line will attain the prediction of supreme enlightenment. How much greater, then, the blessings of those who uphold, recite, and teach it—blessings beyond thought or measure. This, then, is the great intent behind the title: *The Sutra of the Lotus Blossom of the Wonderful Dharma*.
Second, to discriminate the essential teaching of this scripture: This sutra takes the vast, profound, One-Vehicle truth as its core teaching. Generally speaking this is the case, but within it we can distinguish further. The One-Vehicle truth, in brief, has two aspects: the person who rides the vehicle and the vehicle that is ridden. The person of the One Vehicle as taught in this sutra includes practitioners of the Three Vehicles, the four kinds of Hearers, and all sentient beings in the four modes of birth within the Three Realms. All of these are people capable of riding the One Buddha Vehicle; all are children of the Buddha, all are Bodhisattvas, because they all possess Buddha-nature and will eventually succeed to the Buddha's throne. Even beings without a nature, who lack the potential for enlightenment, will also become Buddhas.
As the *Ratna-megha Sūtra* says: "When a Bodhisattva generates the aspiration for enlightenment, they think: 'In all worlds, there are sentient beings of limited wisdom, ignorant, dumb, without a share in nirvana, lacking in faith—beings abandoned by the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. I will tame and guide all such beings, even until they sit at the seat of enlightenment and attain *anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi*.' At the moment this thought arises, the palaces of the demons tremble." It also says: "When the Bodhisattva becomes a Buddha, all their vows are fulfilled."
The *Skillful Means* chapter says: "The Buddhas of the past, present, and future only teach Bodhisattvas." The *Parable* chapter says: "All sentient beings are my children." Furthermore, it says: "All dharmas have, from the beginning, always been still and extinct by nature. The Buddha's children, having practiced the path, will become Buddhas in future lives." Thus, there is not a single sentient being who is not a child of the Buddha; this is why it is vast. And the realm of sentient beings is identical with the realm of nirvana; therefore, it is profound. As a treatise says: "The characteristics of the three realms are that the realm of sentient beings is identical with the realm of nirvana. The *tathāgata-garbha* is not separate from the realm of sentient beings." This is what is called the person of the One Vehicle.
The *dharma* that those of the One Vehicle ride, in brief, has four aspects: the principle of the One Vehicle, the teaching of the One Vehicle, the cause of the One Vehicle, and the result of the One Vehicle.
**The principle of the One Vehicle**: This is the single Dharma Realm, also called the Dharma Body, or the *tathāgata-garbha*. As the *Satya-nirgrantha-sūtra* says: "Mañjuśrī said to the Buddha: 'If there is no distinction between the three vehicles, why did the Thus-Come One teach the three vehicles?' The Buddha said: 'When the Buddhas, the Thus-Come Ones, teach the three vehicles, they are indicating distinctions of ground, not distinctions of vehicle; they are speaking of distinctions of persons, not distinctions of vehicle. When the Buddhas, the Thus-Come Ones, teach the three vehicles, they indicate small merits and teach great merits. But within the Buddha's Dharma, there is no distinction of vehicles. Why is this? Because the Dharma Realm has no distinctions.'" The *Suvarṇa-prabhāsa Sūtra* says: "The Dharma Realm is without discrimination; therefore, there are no different vehicles. For the sake of liberating beings, we speak of three vehicles as a distinction." And this sutra says: "The Buddhas, the Thus-Come Ones, are able to know the ultimate truth of that *dharma*." A commentary on this says: "Truth is the *tathāgata-garbha*. The substance of the Dharma Body is unchanging." And later it says: "The same" indicates that the nature of the Dharma Body of the Buddhas, the Thus-Come Ones, is the same as that of ordinary people, Hearers, and Solitary Enlightened Buddhas; the Dharma Body is equally possessed, without any difference. Commentary: The Dharma Body of the Thus-Come One, the nature of the *tathāgata-garbha*, is equally possessed by all beings and carries them all back to the same origin. For this reason, there are no different vehicles, and this *dharma* is called the principle of the One Vehicle. This is the principle of the One Vehicle.
**The teaching of the One Vehicle**: All the teachings spoken by the Buddhas of the ten directions and three times, from their initial enlightenment to their final nirvana, are all intended to lead beings to the ground of all wisdom. Therefore, they are all called the teaching of the One Vehicle. As the *Skillful Means* chapter says: "These Buddhas also, by countless and infinite skillful methods, various causes, conditions, similes, and words, expound all *dharmas* to beings. All of these *dharmas* are for the sake of the One Buddha Vehicle. All beings who hear the Dharma from the Buddha ultimately attain all forms of knowledge." This teaching pervades the ten directions and three times, without limit or boundary; therefore, it is vast. Every single word and phrase is part of the Buddha Vehicle; one characteristic, one flavor—therefore it is profound. This is the teaching of the One Vehicle.
**The cause of the One Vehicle**: Generally speaking, there are two aspects: (1) the cause of nature and (2) the cause of action.
- The cause of nature: The Buddha-nature possessed by all beings serves as the cause for the three bodies. As the *Never-Despising Bodhisattva* chapter says: "I do not despise you; you will all become Buddhas." A commentary says: "This indicates that all beings possess the Buddha-nature." It also says: "For the determined Hearers and the arrogantly proud Hearers, because their faculties are not yet matured, the Buddha does not give them predictions; the Bodhisattva does. The Bodhisattva gives predictions 'as a skillful means to inspire their resolve.'" According to the meaning of this scripture, even the two vehicles that have entered cessation, as well as beings without a nature, all possess Buddha-nature and will all become Buddhas.
- The cause of action: All wholesome roots—whether of sages or ordinary people, of those on the internal path or external paths, of the path's portion or blessings' portion—all lead without exception to the supreme enlightenment. As the sutra says later: "Some may bow, some merely fold their hands, some raise a single hand, some slightly nod their heads. People who, with a distracted mind, enter a temple and once say 'Namo Buddha' have already walked the path of Buddhahood"—and it elaborates further. The *Scripture of Innate Acts* says: "All wholesome deeds of ordinary beings and sages do not receive the result of afflicted existence; they only receive the eternal result." The *Mahā-karuṇā-puṇḍarīka Sūtra* says: "The Buddha said to Ānanda: 'If people are attached to the results of the three existences, and, with respect to the Buddha's field of merit, practice generosity and other good roots, wishing that in lifetime after lifetime they may not enter nirvana—it is impossible that such good roots will not lead to nirvana. Even though such a person does not seek nirvana, having planted good roots in the Buddha's field, I say that person will certainly enter nirvana.'" The *One-Vehicle Chapter* of the *Nirgrantha-sūtra* says: "The Buddha said to Mañjuśrī: 'All the monks, *nirgranthas*, and others in my Buddha-land are, due to the sustaining power of the Thus-Come One, manifestations of skillful means. Although these people practice various different non-Buddhist teachings, they all cross the same bridge of the Buddhadharma; there is no other way to cross.'" Commentary: According to these texts, we should know that all wholesome deeds of the five vehicles of the Buddhadharma, as well as all various non-Buddhist wholesome deeds, are all of the One Vehicle. All depend on the Buddha-nature, with no difference in substance. As the *Treatise on the Lotus Sūtra* explains this meaning: "What is meant by 'same principle'? That principle has no separate essence. 'No separate essence' means that the countless vehicles are all One Vehicle." And in a later passage, it says: "Your practices are the Bodhisattva path" indicates that those who have generated the thought of enlightenment, later fell away, and then re-generated it: their previously cultivated good roots are not destroyed and bear the same fruit as those cultivated later. This is to reveal the supreme nature of the seed; it is spoken only regarding the wholesome roots of generating the resolve, not implying that other good roots cannot achieve the Buddhafruit. Therefore, there is no contradiction with previously cited texts. From this it follows that: All wholesome roots—whether of ordinary people or sages, internal or external path—emerge from the Buddha-nature and all return to the same origin. Only the Buddha has fully realized this. For this reason, it is vast and profound. This is the cause of the One Vehicle.
**The result of the One Vehicle**: Briefly speaking, there are two kinds: the inherently existing result and the newly arisen result.
- The inherently existing result: The wisdom of the Dharma-Buddha. As the *Length of Life* chapter says: "The Thus-Come One, as it really is, sees the characteristics of the triple realm: there is no birth or death, no retreat or emergence, no abiding in the world or entering nirvana; it is not real, not unreal; not the same, not different." Commentary: This passage, regarding the single Dharma Realm, reveals the single result-body. Since it has no essence, it is not real; since it is without non-essence, it is not unreal; since it is not ultimate truth, it is not "the same"; since it is not conventional truth, it is not "different." As the *Scripture of Innate Acts* says: "The result-body is perfect; there is no virtue it lacks, no principle it does not encompass; it is without name, without form, not to be found among all phenomena; it is not an essence, not a non-essence"—and it elaborates further. It also says: "Beyond the two essences, it abides alone in non-duality." This clarifies the result-body of the Dharma-Buddha.
- The newly arisen result: The other two bodies. As a treatise says: "The result-buddha, *saṃbhoga-kāya*: it is attained when the ten-stage practice is complete, realizing the eternal nirvana." As the scripture says: "Truly, it has been an immeasurable, boundless, hundred, thousand, million, *nayuta* number of *kalpas* since I realized Buddhahood." The *nirmāṇa-kāya*: it appears in accordance with what beings need to see. This refers to leaving the Śākya palace, attaining enlightenment under the tree, and the various Buddhas manifesting throughout the ten directions. As explained in length in the *Treasure Tower* chapter. In summary, all sentient beings, by cultivating myriad practices, equally attain the same fruit of Buddhahood. This is the result of the One Vehicle.
As the *Skillful Means* chapter says: "Know this, Śāriputra: I made a vow from the beginning, wishing to make all beings equal to me without difference. The vow I once made is now fulfilled; I have taught all beings and led them all into the path of Buddhahood." Commentary: This passage explicitly states that the Thus-Come One's wish is fulfilled. Why is it so? Because throughout the three times, through all beings, he has enabled all, according to their capacities, to attain the path of Buddhahood. As the *Ratna-megha Sūtra* says: "If a bowl of oil has been filled to the brim, you cannot add even another drop without it overflowing. When a Bodhisattva becomes a Buddha and all vows are fulfilled, it is the same: there is not the slightest remnant wish left unfulfilled." The *Mahā-Megha Sūtra* says: "The Bodhisattva Mahā-megha-garbha said: 'World-Honored One, may the Thus-Come One, for the sake of beings of little merit in future ages, teach the profound Ocean-Seal *samādhi*.' The Buddha said: 'Good man, do not say this. Why? It is difficult for a Buddha to appear in the world, and it is also difficult to hear this Mahā-Megha Sūtra. How could this be for the sole benefit of the future? For the sake of beings of the three times, I will extensively and individually reveal the Dharma.'" The *Avataṃsaka Sūtra* says: "The Thus-Come One turns the wheel of Dharma; in the three times, it reaches everywhere." According to these texts, we should know that when the Buddhas first realize perfect enlightenment, in a single moment they spiritually transform all beings of the three times. There is not a single one who does not attain supreme enlightenment; thus, the vow has been fulfilled. If even one person were not to attain enlightenment, the original vow would not be fulfilled. Although in truth all are saved, it is without boundary; although it is without boundary, not one is unsaved, because infinite wisdom saves infinite beings.
And later in this scripture, it says: "The span of life I attained when I practiced the Bodhisattva path has not yet been exhausted; it is double the previous number." A commentary explains: "I have not yet completed my practice of the Bodhisattva path" means that, due to the original vow, the realm of sentient beings is not exhausted, and the vow is not yet completed; thus, it says "not yet complete." It does not mean that Buddhahood is not fully attained. "The lifespan attained doubles the previous number" reveals the means of the Thus-Come One's eternal life, showing that it far surpasses numerical measure, beyond reckoning. The intent of this commentary: It is to teach that, as long as sentient beings remain unexhausted, the vow remains unfulfilled. This does not mean that Buddhahood has been realized while the vow still remains unfulfilled, nor does it mean that the Buddha Dharma is fully accomplished while the vow remains unfulfilled. As the *Avataṃsaka Sūtra* says: "As long as all sentient beings have not attained enlightenment, the Buddha Dharma is not complete, and the original vow is not fulfilled." Therefore, we know that the vow and the realization of Buddhahood are such that if one is not satisfied, the other is not either; when one is satisfied, both are. This is the result of the One Vehicle.
To summarize: Principle, Teaching, Cause, and Result—these four *dharmas* cooperate with each other to carry each single person to *sarvajñatā* (all-knowing wisdom). Therefore, these four are called the Dharma of the One Vehicle. It is like four horses cooperating together to pull a single carriage; therefore, we speak of four horses forming a single chariot-team. The same logic applies here.
Question: The principle, the teaching, and conditions work together to bring beings to supreme wisdom—this is acceptable. But since the result already reaches the ultimate state, how can it work together with these three to transport beings?
Answer: This involves four principles. First, because the future Buddha’s power subtly influences beings, guiding them to develop good minds, and through this process they are eventually led to Buddhahood. As the *Nirvana Sutra* says: “Through the conditions of afflictions in the present life, good roots may be cut off, but through the power of future Buddha-nature, good roots are reborn.” Second, the resultant reward body manifests various transformations to aid beings in their progress, as described in the *Sutra on the Original Acts*: “One sees oneself as the future fruit, with all Buddhas touching the crown and expounding the Dharma, thus mind and body walk an inconceivable path.” Third, this sutra contains six instances of predictions—prophecies of attaining supreme enlightenment. Receiving these predictions drives beings to cultivate with faith, ensuring the future result belongs to them and aids their progress. Hence, the text states: “He gives each of his children a single great carriage.” Fourth, this sutra teaches omniscience, where nothing is incomplete and no virtue lacking—all beings reach this result. Through this result, beings connect with both the words and their meaning, generating resolve and advancing through the forty stages. They playfully exercise spiritual powers and transform the four types of beings. Therefore, it is said that beings ride the resultant vehicle, and this vehicle can transport those in the cause-ground. As the verse says: “At that time, the children, joyful and leaping, ride this jeweled carriage, traveling in all directions.” With these four principles, one should understand that the resultant vehicle and the other three methods together transport a single person. In each person, these four conditions harmonize, transcending all extremes and remaining indestructible. Beyond this, there is nothing to add or remove. This is called the vast, profound, and ultimate true reality of the One Vehicle. The core principle of this teaching is briefly described as above.
