> Biography of Venerable Mishaka, Sixth Patriarch of India

> Reverent Master Miccaka was from central India and was associated with the community of immortals, all of whom took Reverend Master Didacaka as their teacher. After attaining liberation and realizing the fruit of sagehood, Master Miccaka went about teaching and converting beings everywhere with the awakened truth he had realized. One day he arrived in the country of North India. Suddenly he saw auspicious clouds of golden color hovering over the city walls. He then told those around him, "This is the energy of the Great Vehicle. In this city there must be a sage who will carry on my Dharma." When he entered the city and came to the market, he indeed met a man carrying a wine vessel. The man approached Miccaka and asked, "Reverend Master, from where have you come, and where do you wish to go?" Miccaka answered, "I come from one's own mind, and I wish to go nowhere." The man asked again, "Do you recognize this object in my hand?" Miccaka replied, "This is a vessel of contact which also carries purity." The man then asked, "Reverend Master, do you recognize me?" Miccaka answered, "If I recognized, then I would not be the self; if I recognized myself, then it would not be you." Miccaka then said to him further, "You should tell me your lineage. I will then reveal your original cause." The man then spoke a verse to answer:

> The Venerable One heard this and understood their connection. He said to Vasumitra, "My teacher Tittaka once said: 'The Tathāgata, while traveling in Northern India long ago, told Ananda: 'In this country, more than three hundred years after my passing, a sage will appear. His surname will be Bharadvaja, and his name will be Vasumitra. He will emerge as the seventh patriarch of the Chan lineage.' This is the prophecy the Tathāgata made about you. You should now renounce the world and become a monk.'" Vasumitra then put down his begging bowl and paid his respects to the Venerable One. Standing nearby, he said, "I recall that in a past eon, I was once a donor and offered a jeweled throne to a Buddha. That Buddha prophesied to me, saying, 'In the Virtuous Age, you will attain the Dharma and become the seventh patriarch.' The meeting we have today is the fruition of that prophecy. O Venerable One of great compassion, please liberate me from this world out of your kindness." The Venerable One then shaved his head and ordained him, perfecting his precepts. Soon after, he instructed him, saying, "I am now old and nearing Parinirvana. The Tathāgata's true Dharma eye treasury I now entrust to you. You must pass it on without letting it be cut off.
