> The Story of the Golden Youth, Chapter 8

> Translated by Tripitaka Master Weijing, Court Minister and Commissioner of Ceremonial Affairs, Master of Radiant Dharma, Purple-Robed

> At that time, the youth Gold-Color felt deeply weary of the shortcomings of life and death. He immediately told his parents about this, then went to the venerable Ananda. After bowing respectfully at his feet, he said, "I now wish to renounce the household life purely in your tradition, receive full ordination as a monk, and vow to practice the pure path under your guidance."

> At that time, the venerable Ananda taught him the way to become a monk. Before long, he was ordained as a monk, and in that brief moment, he cut off all afflictions and attained the state of an Arhat. Having attained this state, he used the wisdom of past-life recollection to examine the continuous chain of karma from previous existences. He saw that his own body possessed extremely extraordinary blessings and great meritorious power. Then he thought: "Though I have attained such meritorious strength, my blessings and lifespan have their limits. The reward I have now received must come from the good causes I created in the past. Now I should open the door to blessings for all beings, inspiring them to respect and value them, and also make my own meritorious power clear and evident." Having thought this, he immediately took off the robe he was wearing and offered it as a pure gift. Through his spiritual power, as one robe was offered, another robe naturally appeared in its place. This happened repeatedly—each time he offered a robe, another one would appear, and again and again they formed a growing pile before the venerable Ananda. The accumulated robes were wonderfully fine and priceless, shining brightly like the morning sun, or like a blazing mass of Jambu River gold. Looking at them again and again, their radiance only grew more beautiful.

> At that moment, the entire assembly witnessed this event and was filled with shock and wonder. All exclaimed: "How amazing! How extraordinary! How wondrous! This blessed one possesses such supreme power. How incredible! To be able to produce such vast and majestic virtuous deeds. If the robe this venerable one removed were to continue unbroken, even that priceless and magnificent sacred garment would be impossible to measure its full extent."

> Then the Venerable Golden One first offered this robe to his parents, and afterward, with a pure heart, presented robes to Venerable Ananda and the community of monks. He went on to give two robes to each person gathered at the assembly in the charnel ground, so that everyone was clothed. Through the spiritual power of the Venerable Golden One, even after such generous giving, the pile of robes remained inexhaustible.

> At that time, the Venerable Golden One, through his own spiritual power, rose into the sky and flew to the great city of Rajagriha. Throughout every street and lane, he took off his own golden robe—vast in size—and piled it up into a large heap. Then, across the whole city of Rajagriha, he proclaimed in a loud voice: "Let all people know: I now take off my own robe and offer it freely to everyone. Take whatever you wish to use." Hearing this, in an instant, countless hundreds of thousands of people gathered in a great assembly, all gazing in wonder. Throughout the streets and lanes of Rajagriha, the golden robe formed a great pile, shining like the light of a rising sun, blazing like the radiant glow of Jambūnada gold. There, suspended high in the air, the Venerable Golden One shone brilliantly, like a majestic mountain of gold, blazing with auspicious splendor. Seeing this, the entire assembly was filled with awe and amazement, their faces beaming like waves on the sea. They all thought: "How extraordinary! How remarkable! This is truly rare! What causes and conditions did he cultivate to attain such awe-inspiring spiritual power and virtue, entirely unique and incomparable? If we too can know the causes he practiced and truly follow them, the fruits we attain will be just as wondrous."

> Seeing this, the crowd, driven by their own desires and curiosities, began to wonder and discuss among themselves: "This venerable one possesses such extraordinary spiritual power and virtue. Has he long cultivated the precepts and practices? Or does he possess the divine eye of wisdom? We should ask him about this." After conversing with one another, they raised their eyes with joyful reverence, joined their palms, and gazed up in sincere devotion. Bowing in homage to the golden-hued venerable one, they praised him with one voice in verse, saying:

> "Great is the merit of the Venerable One, Who has attained the celestial eye of wisdom. Such awesome power he can bestow— Venerable One, please explain this to me now. Whether in this world or the next, Seeking wealth, pleasure, and merit, What excellent practices bring fulfillment? Venerable One, please explain this to me now." There is no delightful thing in this world That does not come to be through merit. Therefore, those who seek true happiness Should diligently cultivate and accumulate merit. In the past, by cultivating a little merit, I encountered Vipaśyin, the Thus-Gone One. Whatever I wished for was fulfilled, And ultimately I attained vast supreme accomplishment. In the past I was born in the six desire heavens, As the sovereign lord of those celestial realms. Through many thousands of millions of births, I enjoyed supreme bliss in heaven after heaven. Never was there sorrow or lack, And likewise in my human births as well. As Wheel-turning Kings and supreme sovereigns, I enjoyed all wealth and pleasures in full. Thus know that merit has great power— In every birth, in every place, Wherever I was born, I accomplished all, Enjoying great blessings and perfect freedom. Beauty and learning were perfectly complete, From my mouth came the fragrance of the blue lotus, My sweet voice brought joy to all who heard, And people delighted in my words. Through the power of my past vows, The merit I now possess is likewise complete. Beauty, merit, and all qualities complete, All who saw me were filled with joy. My family in this life was vast and great, My treasures and wealth beyond measure. Garments of fine Jambūnada gold Covered my body, beautiful and lovely. Every part of my form was perfused With fragrance like the finest sandalwood. That excellent fragrance pervaded all, And those who smelled it were filled with love. Whatever I wished for— Clothes, jewels, and delightful things— The moment such thoughts arose, I instantly accomplished them all. In the pure teaching of the Great Lion of the Śākyas, I have now taken up the life of renunciation, Attained the fruit of Arhatship, And dwell in cool tranquility. I have now crossed beyond this very life, And will not receive another existence. I will not return to this world again, Having realized the deathless peace of Nirvana. The deeds of past lives have brought forth Their present fruits, vast and mighty. Though I now experience these results, The limit of their fruits is nowhere to be seen."

> At that time, after the Golden-colored Venerable One had spoken these verses, countless multitudes—hundreds of thousands, indeed millions upon millions of people—heard these unprecedented, immeasurable, and inconceivable accounts of merit. They were all filled with amazement and awe, and their hearts were stirred with the most profound wonder. Then, with deep sincerity and reverence for the World-Honored One's pure teachings, each person, according to their own means and abilities, engaged in acts of generosity. They made great vows and undertook various meritorious deeds.

> At that time, the Venerable Golden One, addressing the countless people of every kind in the city, opened the gate of merit for them all and inspired faith and reverence. After teaching all that was fitting about meritorious deeds, he used his miraculous power to return through the air to the charnel ground. There, he paid his respects to the Venerable Ananda and the other monks, bowing at their feet in turn, and then withdrew to sit to one side.

> At that time, King Ajātashatru of the realm, having heard that Minister Yung Li had earlier, driven by hatred and jealousy, brought unwarranted harm to the maiden Kāśī Sundarī in the garden, and had falsely accused the innocent Golden Youth, plotting to have him killed and cast aside—upon hearing this, the king was greatly enraged. Glaring at his close minister, he commanded: “Know this now, this wicked person has committed such evil deeds. Seize him and take his life.”

> When the minister Yong Li, who accompanied the king and was present in the assembly, suddenly heard this royal command, he was terrified of death and trembled all over. His mind and eyes were in a daze, as if scorched by fire. He rose and rushed forward, running away in panic. At that moment, the king's ministers and countless hundreds and thousands of people were all filled with anger. They raced together to chase after him and seize him. Once the crowd had captured him, their resentment intensified, and they beat him collectively. The pain pressed upon his body, and there was no way to stop it.

> At that time, Minister Yongli, overwhelmed by danger and weeping bitterly, approached the Venerable Ananda and said: "I beg you, Venerable Sir, to arouse a heart of compassion and rescue me from this suffering. I now have no protector, no savior, no refuge, and am rejected by all. My life is about to come to an end."

> At that time, the Venerable Ananda said to the crowd, "Please stop. Do not kill. I will inform the king of this matter." Upon hearing the Venerable Ananda's words, the people immediately released their hold and did not persist.

> At that time, the Venerable Ananda looked toward King Ajatashatru. The king, understanding his intention, said to the Venerable: "If this fierce and stubborn minister can, in the Venerable's Dharma, purely renounce the household life, or even remain as a devoted lay disciple for the rest of his life, then I shall follow the Venerable's instruction and release him now." The Venerable replied: "So it shall be." When the people heard these words, they ceased the beating and harassment they had inflicted.

> Then the Venerable Ananda said to the Venerable Golden One, "By your power of true blessing, may all the pain in this fierce minister's body be dispelled, and may he be at ease as before." At once, the Venerable Golden One, with a deep and steadfast heart aimed at bringing benefit and joy to all beings, uttered this true blessing: "If this principle is true, and these words are true—that although this fierce minister has done me harm, I hold not even the slightest thought of ill will toward him—then by this truth, may all the pain in this man's body be quickly relieved." The moment these words were spoken, the minister's suffering vanished, and he became at ease as before. He was then able to rise, and his heart was filled with deep faith and delight in the Buddha's pure teaching. He went to the Venerable Ananda, bowed at his feet, and said, "I now wish, in your teaching, to go forth into the pure monastic life, to receive the full precepts and become a monk, and under your guidance, to devote myself to the holy life."

> At that time, the Venerable Ananda taught him the way to renounce the world, until he became a monk. Within a short moment, he cut off all afflictions and attained the fruit of Arhatship. Having attained this fruit, he immediately leapt into the air and displayed various miraculous transformations, causing all in the great assembly to feel at ease in body and mind. Then, the monk Yongli descended from the sky, approached the Venerable Ananda and the other monks, paid homage at their feet in turn, and withdrew to sit to one side.

> At that time, when the entire assembly witnessed the Venerable Ananda perform such great and awe-inspiring miraculous feats, all those present developed the utmost pure and profound faith and reverence toward him. They were all filled with joy, gazing upon him with sincere devotion and heartfelt respect.

> Venerable Ananda, for the sake of all present, taught the Dharma according to each person’s capacity and needs. At that time, countless hundreds of thousands of people in the assembly, having heard what was taught, each gained fruits and benefits according to their differing attainments. Some in the assembly realized the fruit of Stream-Entry, and others even realized the fruit of Arhatship. Some awakened the mind of disciples seeking liberation, while others turned toward the Buddha, found joy in the Dharma, and honored the Sangha. Each and every one received benefit and abided according to their own measure. The merchant Shining Sun (Ri Zhao) and his wife, in that very assembly, saw the truth and attained awakening.

> Moreover, countless hundreds of thousands of celestial beings were filled with a pure and reverent heart of faith. They rained down heavenly robes and played divine music, and also showered the most exquisite flowers from the heavens—such as blue lotuses, pink lotuses, golden lotuses, white lotuses, and mandara flowers. These flowers fell in great abundance, piling up to the knees. Again, various other heavenly blossoms were scattered everywhere, completely filling the burial grove, as an offering made with the utmost respect.
