### 初祖摩訶大迦葉凡三

> First Patriarch Mahakasyapa <note>Three in total</note>

分座。傳衣。世尊示滅。結集法藏。斥出阿難。未盡諸漏。阿難遂於畢鉢巖前。磐陀石上。坐至中夜。得證道果。即現神通。透石而入。

> Seating arrangements. Passing on the robe. The World-Honored One showed his passing into nirvana. The collection of the Dharma treasury. Expelling Ananda, who had not yet exhausted all defilements. Ananda then sat on the Boulder Stone before the Pippala Cave. He remained seated until midnight and attained the fruit of the path. Then, manifesting miraculous powers, he passed through the stone and entered.

迦葉後付法眼。而說偈云。法法本來法。無法無非法。何於一法中。有法有不法。

> After Kāśyapa received the Dharma-eye, he spoke this verse: Dharma is originally just as it is— No dharma, and no non-dharma. Why then, within a single dharma, Should there be any dharma or non-dharma?

有外道問。如何是我我。祖云。覔我者是汝我。外道云。這箇是我我。師我何在。祖云。汝問我覔。

> A non-Buddhist asked, "What is my self?" The Patriarch replied, "The one seeking the self is your self." The non-Buddhist said, "So this is my self. But where is the true self?" The Patriarch answered, "You ask about it, and you seek it."

祖踏泥次。有沙彌問。尊者何得自為。祖云。我若不為。誰為我為。

> The Ancestor trod the mud step by step. A novice monk asked, "Venerable One, why do you do this yourself?" The Ancestor replied, "If I do not do it, who will do it for me?"

法眼云。我當時若見。拽來踏泥。

> Fayen said, "If I had seen him at that time, I would have dragged him over and trampled him into the mud."
