### 二祖阿難尊者凡三

祖一日白佛云。今日入城。見一奇特事。佛云。見何奇特事。祖云。入城時。見一攢樂人作舞。出城。總見無常。佛云。我昨日入城。亦見一奇特事。祖云。未審見何奇特事。佛云。我入城時。見一攢樂人作舞。出城時。亦見一攢樂人作舞。

> One day, the Patriarch said to the Buddha, "Today I entered the city and saw something extraordinary." The Buddha asked, "What extraordinary thing did you see?" The Patriarch replied, "As I entered the city, I saw a group of performers dancing. When I left the city, I saw only impermanence." The Buddha said, "Yesterday, I also entered the city and saw something extraordinary." The Patriarch asked, "May I ask what extraordinary thing you saw?" The Buddha replied, "When I entered the city, I saw a group of performers dancing. When I left the city, I also saw a group of performers dancing."

祖問迦葉云。師兄。世尊傳金襴袈裟外。別傳箇甚麼。迦葉召阿難。祖應諾。迦葉云。倒却門前剎竿著。

> The Patriarch asked Kāśyapa, “Elder brother, besides transmitting the golden robe, what else did the World-Honored One transmit?” Kāśyapa called out, “Ānanda!” The Patriarch responded, “Yes?” Kāśyapa said, “Knock down the flagpole in front of the gate.”

汾陽昭云。不問那知。

> Fenyang Zhao said, "If you don't ask, how would you know?"

翠巖芝云。千年無影樹。今時沒底靴。

> Cuìyán Zhī said: “The thousand-year-old tree casts no shadow; today’s boots have no bottom.”

祖大事既辦。詣常水河。化為金地。集諸聖眾。顧得道弟子商那和修。付正法眼。說偈云。本來付有法。付了言無法。各各須自悟。悟了無無法。

> The great matter of the patriarch was accomplished. He went to the River of Eternal Water and transformed it into a golden land, gathering all the holy assembly. He looked upon his enlightened disciple, Shanavasa, and entrusted him with the true Dharma eye. He spoke this verse: "Originally given with a method, Given, yet nothing to grasp. Each must awaken on their own— Awakened, there is neither nothing nor method."
