### 三祖商那和修尊者凡一

> Third Patriarch, Venerable Shanavasa<note>Volume 1</note>

問優婆毱多云。汝年幾耶。云。我年十七。祖云。汝身十七耶。性十七耶。云師髮已白。為髮白耶。心白耶。祖云。但髮白。非心白爾。云我身十七。非性十七。祖知是法器。

> He asked Upagupta, "How old are you?" Upagupta replied, "I am seventeen." The Patriarch said, "Is your body seventeen, or is your nature seventeen?" Upagupta said, "The Master's hair has turned white—is it the hair that is white, or the mind that is white?" The Patriarch replied, "It is only the hair that is white, not the mind." Upagupta then said, "My body is seventeen, but my nature is not seventeen." The Patriarch recognized that he was a vessel of the Dharma.

後付法眼。而說偈云。非法亦非心。無心亦無法。說是心法時。是法非心法。

> Then he transmitted the Dharma Eye and recited a verse: Neither is it a phenomenon nor a mind; Neither is there a mind nor a phenomenon. When speaking of this mind and this phenomenon, It is neither mind nor phenomenon.
