> Fourth Patriarch, Venerable Upagupta

> The Master visited a nun. As soon as he entered the door, he knocked over her alms bowl. The nun said, "When the Buddha was alive, the group of six monks were quite rude and often came to my place, but they never behaved like this. You, who have succeeded the Patriarch's position, how can you be so rough?"

> Fenyang Zhao said on behalf of: "The mistake is already known."

> The Patriarch taught the Dharma and guided beings, filling the stone chamber with his wisdom. A wealthy man's son named Zhongxiang came to the Patriarch seeking to become a monk. The Patriarch asked him, "Is your mind renouncing the world, or is your body renouncing the world?" Zhongxiang replied, "I am renouncing the world myself, not for the sake of body or mind." The Patriarch asked, "If not for body or mind, then who is renouncing the world?" Zhongxiang said, "One who truly renounces the world has no sense of self or ownership. The mind neither arises nor ceases. When the mind neither arises nor ceases, that is the eternal Way. Thus, all Buddhas are eternal. The mind has no form or shape, and its true nature is likewise." The Patriarch said, "You will awaken greatly, and your mind will naturally become unobstructed." He then shaved Zhongxiang's head, giving him the name Tidaka, and transmitted the Dharma eye to him, speaking this verse: The mind is originally the mind itself; The original mind is not a thing. If there is a thing, there is an original mind; But it is neither mind nor a thing.
