### 五祖提多迦尊者凡一

> Fifth Patriarch, Venerable Dhītika<note>Volume One</note>

有彌遮迦者。見師慈相。即悟宿因。乃棄仙術。而求聖果。請問祖云。我於仙道。更無進趣。唯守虗靜。不達至理。祖云。佛言。修仙敬學小道似繩牽。汝可自知之。若棄小流。頓歸大海。當證無生。彌遮迦聞語。豁然契悟。

> There was one named Mijiajia. Seeing his master's compassionate appearance, he immediately awakened to the causes of his past lives. He then abandoned the arts of immortality and sought the noble fruit of enlightenment. He asked the Patriarch, "In the path of immortality, I have made no further progress. I merely abide in emptiness and stillness, yet I do not penetrate the ultimate truth." The Patriarch said, "The Buddha spoke: 'The practice of cultivating immortality and honoring learning on such a lesser path is like being pulled by a rope.' You should know this yourself. If you cast off the small stream and suddenly return to the great ocean, you will realize the unborn." Hearing these words, Mijiajia was suddenly and thoroughly awakened.

後付法眼。而說偈云。通達本法心。無法無非法。悟了同未悟。無悟亦無法。

> Then, transmitting the Dharma-eye to his successor, he spoke this verse: "To truly understand the nature of mind, There is no Dharma, nor anything that is not Dharma. The awakened sees as the unawakened sees, For there is no awakening, nor any Dharma to grasp."
